Tusshar Kapoor Not Worried About Kapkapiii Being Compared with Malayalam Original Romancham

In a recent interview, actor-producer Tusshar Kapoor expressed his confidence in his latest horror-comedy film Kapkapiii, brushing off comparisons with the 2023 Malayalam hit Romancham, on which the Hindi film is based. Kapoor explained that while Kapkapiii takes inspiration from Romancham, it brings its own flavor, ensuring it connects with Hindi-speaking audiences in a unique way.

Directed by the late Sangeeth Sivan, Kapkapiii was released on May 23, 2025, and stars Tusshar Kapoor alongside Shreyas Talpade. The film marks the reunion of the popular comedic duo after their work in the Golmaal series. The plot revolves around a group of young men living together who, out of boredom, decide to experiment with a Ouija board. What begins as innocent fun soon spirals into chaos as strange, supernatural events begin to unfold in their home. This blend of humor and horror lies at the heart of Kapkapiii's appeal.

Kapoor emphasized that Kapkapiii is not a frame-by-frame remake. Instead, the filmmakers have taken creative liberties to tailor the story to the sensibilities of the Hindi film audience. Elements of romance and heightened horror have been added to give the film a fresh identity. The goal was not to replicate Romancham, but to reimagine its core idea for a wider, pan-Indian audience.

He also mentioned that many viewers of Kapkapiii might not be familiar with Romancham, which primarily reached audiences in the Malayalam-speaking regions. Therefore, the Hindi version is likely to be viewed on its own merit by a large section of the public. Kapoor noted that remakes are a common practice in Indian cinema and can be very successful if executed well. The key lies in adapting the essence of the original while ensuring that it resonates with a new demographic.

The making of Kapkapiii also held emotional significance for the cast and crew, as it turned out to be the last film directed by Sangeeth Sivan before his untimely demise. Kapoor acknowledged Sivan’s contribution, calling him a visionary director who knew how to blend genres effortlessly. His guidance was instrumental in shaping the film’s unique tone and pace.

Critics and audiences alike have shown interest in how Kapkapiii balances laughter with scares. With Kapoor and Talpade’s comedic timing and the film’s eerie storyline, Kapkapiii aims to offer something refreshing in the horror-comedy genre. Kapoor remains hopeful that audiences will enjoy the film for what it brings to the table, rather than merely comparing it to its source material.

In conclusion, Tusshar Kapoor stands by Kapkapiii as a creative endeavor in its own right. He invites audiences to experience the film with an open mind and appreciate the efforts made to deliver a story that is entertaining, spooky, and funny—just as a good horror-comedy should be.
