Let’s face it, Bollywood doesn't always get it right when it comes to family-friendly, animal-centric cinema. But every once in a while, a movie comes along that makes you want to hug your furry best friend a little tighter. Amit Rai’s latest directorial venture, Ohh My Dog, is exactly that breath of fresh air.

With a solid 3-star rating echoing across critic circles, this film is breaking the mold by putting our four-legged companions front and center.

A Tale of Two Pups

Ohh My Dog intertwines two gripping narratives from two different corners of the country. In Dibrugarh, Assam, we meet Apu (played brilliantly by child actor Mahi Rai) and his beloved dog, Momo. When Momo suddenly vanishes feared to be abducted by a dog smuggling ring Apu refuses to let apathetic local cops dictate his pet's fate and sets off on a mission to track him down.

Meanwhile, in Patna, Bihar, the tables are turned. It’s an underage construction worker named Prince who goes missing, and it’s his loyal dog, Oscar, who raises the alarm. The search brings in Prince's teacher, played by the ever-dependable Pankaj Tripathi, who steps in when the local authorities drag their feet.

The Real Stars: Bruno and Momo

While the human cast including Pankaj Tripathi in a delightfully adorable supporting role, and the commanding Pavan Malhotra put their best foot forward, the true show-stealers walk on four legs.

Bruno, the dog playing Oscar, will absolutely melt your heart. Director Amit Rai deserves major applause for executing a film where a dog isn't just a prop, but a principal character executing action sequences and driving the plot. We hear the sequence featuring 250 dogs is an absolute visual treat that will wow audiences of all ages!

The Celebrity Hour Verdict

Is it flawless? Not quite. Clocking in at a hefty 150 minutes, the film asks for a bit too much of your time and could have easily been trimmed down by 15 minutes to keep the tension taut. Some narrative stretches involving illegal tracking apps and the Dibrugarh SHO's baffling behavior test the limits of realism.

However, thanks to Mate Herbai’s breathtaking cinematography that captures Assam and Bihar like never before, and the undeniable chemistry between the kids and their dogs, the film manages to overcome its pacing bumps.

Our Take: Ohh My Dog is an endearing, unusual, and highly emotional entertainer. It takes immense courage to make a film primarily catering to a younger audience in today’s box-office climate. If you're looking for an inspiring, clap-worthy theatre experience this weekend take your kids, and definitely take some tissues.
