Shilpa Shirodkar Recalls Being Labeled ‘Jinxed’ After Her First Two Films Got Shelved

Veteran Bollywood actress Shilpa Shirodkar has opened up about the difficult start to her film career, revealing how she was unfairly labeled “jinxed” or “panauti” in the industry after two of her early film projects were shelved before completion. In a candid interview, she shared how this early setback nearly derailed her aspirations and how she managed to bounce back with resilience and support.

Shirodkar was all set to make her big debut in 1986 with Sautan Ki Beti, directed by Sawan Kumar Tak. The launch was grand, taking place at Mumbai’s Filmalaya Studios with significant buzz and high expectations. However, despite the strong start, the project never went into production. Two years later, she was informed by the director that the film had been shelved and that she should consider seeking other roles.

Hoping to find another opportunity, her mother reached out to renowned photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha, who helped Shirodkar connect with producers Boney Kapoor and Surinder Kapoor. The Kapoors were planning a film titled Jungle, with Shirodkar set to star opposite Sanjay Kapoor. But fate had other plans. The film was scrapped and replaced with Prem, and Shirodkar was no longer part of the cast.

Having lost two promising opportunities even before making her debut, rumors began to swirl within the industry. People began to label her as unlucky—a “panauti” whose involvement supposedly doomed projects. This reputation made it increasingly difficult for her to land roles, and she faced the emotional burden of being unfairly judged for circumstances beyond her control.

However, fate soon turned in her favor thanks to the kindness and belief of a fellow actor. A well-wisher in the industry brought her situation to the attention of Mithun Chakraborty, one of Bollywood’s most respected actors. Recognizing the unfairness of the labels attached to her, Chakraborty offered Shirodkar a role in Ramesh Sippy’s film Bhrashtachar (1989). She played the role of a blind girl in the film, starring alongside Mithun and Rekha. The movie marked her official entry into Bollywood and served as her breakthrough.

After Bhrashtachar, Shilpa Shirodkar’s career gained momentum. She went on to star in successful films such as Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), Trinetra (1991), and Hum (1991), alongside big names in the industry. Her portfolio continued to grow with popular films like Khuda Gawah, Aankhen, Pehchaan, Gopi Kishan, Bewafa Sanam, and Mrityudand.

Reflecting on those early struggles, Shirodkar emphasized the importance of family support in overcoming criticism and negativity. “They said I was jinxed, a panauti. Whenever I signed a big film, it got shelved. But if you have strong family support, these things don’t matter,” she said.

Her story is a powerful reminder of how persistence, belief, and a bit of kindness can overcome even the harshest judgments in a competitive industry. Shilpa Shirodkar’s journey from rejection to recognition is a testament to the resilience it takes to survive and thrive in Bollywood.
