Saurabh Shukla Says Meeting Young, Ambitious Ranbir Kapoor on Barfi! Set Rekindled His Love for Acting

Veteran actor Saurabh Shukla recently opened up about a dark period in his career when he felt diminished by the small, forgettable roles he was getting — until the day he met Ranbir Kapoor on the set of Barfi!. The encounter, he says, jolted him back into the belief that acting could still matter.

Shukla explained that before Barfi!, he was going through what many actors fear: when people compliment your talent, yet your roles don’t reflect it. “They used to say, ‘Saurabh, you’re such a good actor,’ but when roles came, they were always cameos,” he recalled, describing the frustration of having just a day of shooting and scarcely a moment on screen.

When director Anurag Basu offered him a role in Barfi!, Shukla says he almost declined, weary of being disappointed again. He asked Basu only to call him if he had something meaningful, otherwise to let him focus on writing or making smaller films. “I was going through a low phase,” he admitted.
