Renuka Shahane on Being a Director, Her Co-stars and More

Renuka Shahane, a name synonymous with warmth, grace, and effortless charm, recently shared insights into her evolving journey as an actor and director. Known for her iconic smile and memorable roles in both television and film, Shahane opened up about her transition behind the camera, her thoughts on working with co-stars, and the creative process that fuels her work.

Renuka Shahane’s career began long before she became a household name with the cultural television program Surabhi. In fact, her early acting days included appearances in shows like PC Aur Mausi, Circus—where she worked with Shah Rukh Khan—and Lifeline. It was during this time that her interest in direction first took root. She assisted veteran director Dr. Vijaya Mehta, which planted the seeds of storytelling beyond acting.

While Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! brought her national fame, Shahane chose a more grounded path after her marriage to actor Ashutosh Rana. She stepped away from the limelight to focus on family and writing. With encouragement from her husband, she transitioned into directing and made her debut with the Marathi film Rita, based on a novel written by her mother, Shanta Gokhale. The project was a deeply personal one and completed in just 24 days, showcasing her passion and efficiency as a storyteller.

Renuka Shahane’s Hindi directorial debut came with Tribhanga in 2021. Starring Kajol, Tanvi Azmi, and Mithila Palkar, the film explored complex intergenerational dynamics between women. Shahane described the experience as creatively fulfilling, especially working with Kajol, whom she praised for her spontaneity and emotional depth. She also acknowledged the benefits of OTT platforms in allowing creators to explore themes and dialogues that might be restricted in mainstream cinema.

Despite her directorial focus, Shahane continues to cherish acting. She has been seen in diverse roles in films like 3 Storeys and Bucket List, where she worked again with Madhuri Dixit, her co-star from Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! Shahane spoke fondly of Madhuri’s humility, discipline, and grace.
