Pakistani Influencer Sana Yousaf Shot Dead by Man She Repeatedly Rejected

In a deeply tragic and shocking incident, 17-year-old Pakistani influencer Sana Yousaf was shot dead in Islamabad by a man who had reportedly been stalking her and whose advances she had repeatedly rejected. The brutal murder has sparked widespread outrage across Pakistan and the global digital community, reigniting concerns over women’s safety, online harassment, and gender-based violence.

Sana Yousaf, a rising social media star with over a million followers across TikTok and Instagram, was known for her engaging content, including dance, fashion, and cultural videos. On June 1, just hours after celebrating her birthday, Sana was found dead in her home in Islamabad's G-13 sector. She had been shot twice at close range. According to police, the shooter, later identified as 22-year-old Umar Hayat, entered her home under the guise of being a guest and committed the crime in cold blood.

Investigations revealed that Umar Hayat was a cousin of Sana and had persistently harassed her despite her clear rejections. CCTV footage showed him loitering near her house for hours before gaining entry. He fled the scene immediately after committing the murder. Law enforcement acted swiftly, arresting Hayat in Faisalabad within 20 hours of the incident. Authorities recovered the weapon used in the murder, Sana’s mobile phone, and the clothes worn by the accused at the time of the crime.

During interrogation, Hayat confessed to the crime, citing Sana’s refusal to enter into a relationship with him as his motive. The Islamabad police described the murder as premeditated and “cold-blooded.” He was presented before a magistrate on June 4 and is currently in judicial custody, with the next hearing scheduled for June 18.

The public response has been overwhelming. The hashtag #JusticeForSanaYousaf trended on social media platforms, with users expressing grief, anger, and solidarity. Prominent figures, influencers, and women’s rights organizations condemned the act and demanded stricter measures to protect women from stalking and violence, both online and offline.

Sana’s murder is disturbingly reminiscent of the 2016 killing of Qandeel Baloch, another Pakistani social media influencer who was murdered by her brother in the name of family honor. Sana’s death once again highlights the risks faced by young women who choose to express themselves publicly, particularly in conservative societies.

Activist groups such as Aurat March Islamabad held demonstrations and called for systemic reforms. They emphasized that the right to say “no” must be respected and that the state must take stronger actions against individuals who use violence to assert control over women’s choices.
