Nana Patekar Turns Down SS Rajamouli’s SSMB29 Despite ₹20 Crore Offer

Veteran actor Nana Patekar has reportedly turned down a key role in acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s much-anticipated movie SSMB29. The role came with a substantial offer—₹20 crore for just 15 days of shooting—but Patekar chose to decline after reviewing the character and script.

The role in question was that of the father of Mahesh Babu’s character, a crucial supporting role in the film. Known for his intense and powerful performances, Patekar was seen as a valuable addition to the cast. In an effort to personally convince him, Rajamouli traveled to Patekar’s farmhouse in Pune to narrate the film’s storyline and discuss the role. Despite this, Patekar reportedly felt the character did not appeal to him creatively and politely declined the offer.

While the exact reasons behind his decision remain private, sources suggest that Patekar’s refusal is rooted in his strong commitment to meaningful roles. He is known to be selective about the characters he portrays, preferring depth and substance over commercial gains. Although he turned down this particular role, he expressed respect for Rajamouli and an openness to working with him in the future if a role suits his artistic values.

The film SSMB29 is generating significant buzz across India and beyond. It stars Mahesh Babu in the lead and marks his first collaboration with SS Rajamouli, who gained global fame for directing Baahubali and RRR. The project also features Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in pivotal roles, adding to the film’s star power and pan-Indian appeal.

Described as a large-scale adventure thriller with mythological undertones, SSMB29 is said to be inspired by the tale of Lord Hanuman, infused with the adventurous spirit of Hollywood films like Indiana Jones. Though the story is set in the sacred city of Kashi (Varanasi), the production team is building elaborate sets in Hyderabad to replicate the ancient city. This allows for greater creative control during shooting. Additionally, some important scenes have already been filmed in Odisha, showcasing grand locations and cutting-edge visual effects.

The makers are reportedly aiming for a theatrical release on March 25, 2027—a strategic date that marks the fifth anniversary of Rajamouli’s blockbuster RRR. Given the film’s scale, cast, and director, expectations are sky-high.

Nana Patekar’s absence is a loss for the film, but his decision reflects his enduring dedication to the craft of acting. While fans may be disappointed not to see him in this role, many will look forward to his future collaborations with visionary directors like SS Rajamouli.
