Moushumi Chatterjee Breaks Down Over Wearing a Backless Blouse in Early Film Career

Veteran Bollywood actress Moushumi Chatterjee recently opened up in an interview about a distressing incident from the early days of her film career that left her in tears. Known for her dignified screen presence and strong moral compass, Moushumi recounted how she was once forced into wearing a revealing costume for a film shoot, which deeply violated her sense of modesty and comfort.

The incident occurred during the filming of Kucche Dhaage (1973), directed by Raj Khosla. At the time, Moushumi was still adjusting to the norms of the Hindi film industry, having previously worked in Bengali cinema. She shared that she had not seen the costume until she reached the set. When the wardrobe was revealed—a backless blouse tied with strings and a short ghaghra—she was overwhelmed and emotionally shattered.

Moushumi explained how vulnerable and exposed the outfit made her feel. The moment she saw herself in the mirror, she felt as though she was naked. Unable to hold back her emotions, she broke down in tears on the set. She immediately called her husband and cried over the phone, saying she couldn’t continue with the shoot and wanted to return to Kolkata. Her husband, recognizing the seriousness of her distress, rushed to the set to support her.

Though shaken, she ultimately decided to continue working on the film. This decision reflected both her professional commitment and the personal strength she drew from her values and support system. Her experience highlights the pressure that actresses have often faced in conforming to certain beauty standards or cinematic expectations that may conflict with their personal boundaries.

Moushumi also revealed that her discomfort with certain clothing choices had been a recurring issue in her career. In another instance, she turned down a role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi because she was asked to wear a short skirt. That role eventually went to Jaya Bachchan. Moushumi has always prioritized her dignity over popularity or commercial success. She believes beauty is best expressed through the face, the smile, and one’s body language—not through revealing clothing. Her firm stand on such matters, especially during a time when actresses had fewer choices or protections, showcases her courage and integrity.

Even now, decades later, her principles remain unchanged. After a 12-year hiatus, Moushumi Chatterjee returned to the big screen with the Bengali film Aarii, which was released in April 2025. The film, directed by Jiit Chakraborty, explores the emotional relationship between a widowed mother and her caregiver son.
