Influencer Kamal Kaur’s Murder Sparks Outrage Over Moral Policing in Punjab

A tragic incident has shaken Punjab and the Indian social media community after popular influencer Kanchan Kumari, known online as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, was found dead in a locked car on June 11, 2025. The discovery, made near Adesh Medical University in Bathinda, followed complaints from locals about a foul smell emanating from the vehicle. Upon investigation, police uncovered her body and confirmed that she had been strangled, with initial findings suggesting the murder occurred elsewhere before her body was left inside the car.

Kamal Kaur Bhabhi was a well-known figure on social media, especially on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, where she had amassed hundreds of thousands of followers. Her content, often bold, humorous, and provocative, earned both admiration and criticism. She was particularly famous for creating short video reels with sharp, outspoken commentary and an unapologetically bold persona. However, this online popularity also made her a target for moral policing from conservative sections of society.

Investigators revealed that the murder was premeditated, carried out by individuals affiliated with a radical religious group. Two men, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, were arrested in connection with the case. The alleged mastermind behind the murder, Amritpal Singh Mehron, remains at large but has publicly claimed responsibility for orchestrating the crime. In his online statements, Mehron condemned Kamal Kaur’s content as offensive to cultural values and issued warnings to other female content creators producing similar videos.

The primary motive behind the killing appears to be moral policing. The accused cited Kamal Kaur’s use of the surname “Kaur” — a respected title within the Sikh community — alongside her bold, often provocative online presence as disrespectful to religious and cultural traditions. In previous incidents, Kamal Kaur had reportedly received threats and warnings about her content from extremist-linked figures, though she did not file any formal complaints.

This shocking incident has not only raised concerns about the safety of women content creators but also sparked a broader conversation about freedom of expression in the digital age. The case highlights how, in certain parts of society, deeply rooted patriarchal and conservative attitudes still fuel violent actions against women who publicly assert their individuality and challenge traditional norms.

Following the incident, other influencers in the region, including Deepika Luthra, have come forward, expressing fears for their safety amid similar threats. Calls for stronger legal protections for digital creators and stricter action against self-appointed moral vigilantes have intensified across social and mainstream media.

Law enforcement authorities continue their investigation, using forensic evidence and CCTV footage to piece together the events leading up to Kamal Kaur’s death. The manhunt for Mehron is ongoing, with police determined to bring all involved to justice.

This tragic episode serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by women expressing themselves openly in public and online spaces. It also underscores the urgent need for societal change, legal reforms, and a safer environment where individuals are free to live, create, and speak without fear of violent retribution.
