Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, known for his reserved nature when it comes to his personal life, recently broke his silence and opened up about the emotional journey and deep introspection following his divorces with ex-wives Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao. In a heartfelt conversation, the actor reflected on how these life-altering experiences have shaped him, his relationships, and his understanding of emotional maturity.
Aamir Khan was first married to Reena Dutta in 1986. The couple was together for 16 years and had two children — Junaid and Ira. Their marriage ended in 2002, a phase Aamir describes as emotionally challenging. Later, in 2005, he married Kiran Rao, a filmmaker he met during the making of Lagaan. They had a strong bond, both personally and professionally, and welcomed a son, Azad, through surrogacy. However, their relationship too came to an end in 2021, with the couple announcing their separation in a joint statement that emphasized respect and co-parenting.
In the interview, Aamir Khan expressed that although he has achieved much in his professional life, he feels he fell short in his personal responsibilities, especially towards his family. He admitted being so consumed by work and perfection that he did not give enough time and emotional support to his loved ones. The actor went on to say that he considers himself responsible for the failures in his marriages and wishes he had made different choices earlier in life.
Aamir shared that he was "trying to be a better father, son, and husband" but realized his efforts came too late. He described his regret for not spending enough time with his children and now actively works towards rebuilding and strengthening those relationships. His emotional vulnerability during the conversation revealed a different side of the actor — one who deeply feels, reflects, and wants to grow.
Despite the heartbreak of both separations, Aamir maintains close bonds with both Reena and Kiran. He described his ex-wives as incredible women and emphasized that their support and mutual respect helped him go through the difficult times. With Kiran Rao in particular, he continues to collaborate professionally, and they co-parent Azad with love and understanding.
Aamir also acknowledged how divorce is often viewed with stigma, especially in Indian society. He encouraged others to recognize that relationships can evolve and end with dignity, without hatred or bitterness. He emphasized that while their marriages didn’t last, the love and care remain intact in a different form.
The actor concluded by saying that the journey of introspection continues for him. He believes in learning from past mistakes and becoming a more present and empathetic person. Known for his on-screen brilliance, Aamir’s off-screen honesty offers a rare glimpse into the complex emotional world of a man often seen as Bollywood's "perfectionist."
His candid reflections have sparked conversations about emotional accountability, modern relationships, and the importance of balancing professional success with personal well-being.
