Dharmendra Recalls How Amitabh Bachchan Bagged Role in Sholay Because of Him

Veteran actor Dharmendra recently reminisced about the making of the 1975 cult classic Sholay and revealed that Amitabh Bachchan landed the iconic role of Jai because of his recommendation. In a candid revelation, Dharmendra said that Amitabh was not the first choice for the role, but it was his informal support that helped the now-legendary actor secure the part.

According to Dharmendra, the role of Jai was initially being considered for Shatrughan Sinha, who was a rising star at the time. However, Amitabh Bachchan, who had started gaining attention through films like Zanjeer and Bombay to Goa, approached Dharmendra personally for help. Recalling the incident, Dharmendra said, “Yaar, kuch samajh nahi aata, woh pehle aaya, socha chalo bechare ko de do,” meaning that since Amitabh came to him first and seemed earnest, he felt it was right to recommend him.

Dharmendra clarified that he did not "give" the role to Amitabh but merely recommended him to the makers. His support turned out to be instrumental in shaping the decision of director Ramesh Sippy and writers Salim–Javed, who were already impressed by Amitabh's previous performances. Eventually, with Dharmendra’s backing, Amitabh was chosen to play Jai—a role that became one of the most iconic in Bollywood history.

This revelation sheds new light on how crucial off-screen relationships and gestures can be in shaping careers. Dharmendra, already a massive star at that time, used his influence in a modest and heartfelt way to support a fellow actor. His willingness to stand by Amitabh shows the camaraderie and humility that existed among some of the film industry’s biggest names.

Ramesh Sippy, the director of Sholay, had once admitted that he was initially hesitant to cast too many big names in one film. However, after being convinced of Amitabh's talent and reassured by Dharmendra's support, he agreed to bring him on board. The result was cinematic history.

Shatrughan Sinha, on the other hand, had no hard feelings about not getting the role. He attributed his absence from the film to scheduling conflicts and expressed that while he was disappointed to miss such a landmark project, he was happy that his friend Amitabh got a career-defining opportunity.

The on-screen bond between Jai and Veeru in Sholay is legendary, and interestingly, Amitabh and Dharmendra shared a strong friendship off-screen as well. During the filming of Sholay, the two actors would often travel to the set together and spend their free time playing cards, strengthening their personal bond which translated effortlessly to the screen.
