Aamir Khan Reflects on Laapataa Ladies—Says Early OTT Release Hurt Theatrical Potential

Aamir Khan recently opened up about the performance of Laapataa Ladies, expressing regret over the decision to release the film on OTT platforms too soon after its theatrical debut. Despite the film being critically acclaimed and widely appreciated by audiences, Khan believes that it didn’t receive the box office success it truly deserved—largely because of its early streaming release.

Directed by Kiran Rao and released theatrically on March 1, 2024, Laapataa Ladies was met with glowing reviews and strong word-of-mouth. However, just eight weeks later, it was made available on Netflix. While this move made the film accessible to a larger digital audience, Aamir Khan now feels it may have undercut its theatrical potential. Speaking candidly at an event, he stated, "If it hadn’t gone to Netflix so soon, it would have been a huge success."

Khan emphasized the importance of timing in a film’s release strategy. He noted that word-of-mouth is powerful, but it needs time to build momentum in theatres. When a film transitions quickly to OTT, potential moviegoers may choose to wait and watch it at home instead of heading to the cinema. According to him, Laapataa Ladies could have drawn more people to theatres if it had a longer exclusive theatrical window.

The actor-producer also touched upon a broader theme that affects the entire film industry today—how to balance between theatrical releases and digital streaming. In an era where many films are released directly on OTT or made available shortly after theatrical release, the traditional box-office model is under pressure. Aamir Khan believes that while OTT platforms are important for accessibility and reach, they should not replace the theatrical experience, especially for films that thrive on strong audience engagement.

Further, he pointed out that box-office collections are the most objective measure of a film’s success. While critical acclaim and positive feedback are encouraging, actual ticket sales reflect how well the movie connected with audiences. He added that the theatrical response to Laapataa Ladies was steadily growing before the OTT launch interrupted that trajectory.

Khan also mentioned that such experiences offer important lessons for filmmakers, producers, and distributors. He said that in future projects, including his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, more attention would be given to planning release schedules so that both theatrical and OTT audiences are catered to, but not at the cost of one another.

In conclusion, Aamir Khan’s reflections on Laapataa Ladies underscore a critical shift in the industry—where timing and platform strategy are as crucial as content. While OTT has revolutionized film accessibility, the big screen still holds a special place for movies that thrive on word-of-mouth, communal viewing, and emotional impact. This introspection may inspire more filmmakers to rethink their release timelines and prioritize the unique magic of theatres.
