Aamir Khan Blames Nepotism Debate for Son Junaid Khan's Loveyapa Box Office Failure

Veteran actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan has spoken candidly about the disappointing box office performance of his son Junaid Khan’s debut film Loveyapa. In a recent interview with content creator Raj Shamani, Aamir opened up about the film’s reception, blaming the ongoing nepotism debate in Bollywood for the severe backlash it received. According to him, Loveyapa did not get a fair chance with the audience because many people dismissed it as a “nepo-kid film,” due to the presence of star kids like Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor in lead roles.

Aamir stated, “I think uss film ko bhut negative backlash aaya. It was heavily trolled, nepotism mein bhut chali gayi ki yeh nepo kids hai.” This emotional statement reflects his disappointment and concern over the industry's harsh judgment against newcomers from film families, regardless of their talent or hard work. He believes the film suffered not because of its content or performances, but because of preconceived notions rooted in the nepotism debate that has plagued Bollywood for years.

Loveyapa, directed by Advait Chandan, is a Hindi remake of the 2022 Tamil romantic comedy Love Today. The story follows a young couple who are asked to swap phones for a day before marriage, leading to hilarious and emotional revelations. Despite a relatable storyline and youthful energy, the film struggled to make an impact at the box office. It managed to earn only ₹8.85 crore worldwide, which was far below expectations. However, the film found some appreciation after its release on OTT platforms, particularly on JioHotstar, where it was received more warmly.

Aamir Khan also revealed that he was far more emotionally invested in Loveyapa than in his own films. He described the process as more stressful than any of his personal projects, indicating just how much he cared about his son’s debut. He clarified that he never pushed Junaid into acting or interfered in his career choices. In fact, Aamir had once discouraged Junaid from formally learning acting, wanting him to find his own way and understand the craft independently.
