Who Is Sharmistha Panoli? The Influencer Supported by Kangana Ranaut After Her Arrest Over 'Operation Sindoor' Remarks

Sharmistha Panoli, a 22-year-old law student and social media influencer based in Pune, recently found herself at the center of a nationwide controversy. Known for her outspoken views on current affairs, Panoli gained significant attention after uploading a video to Instagram on May 14, 2025, in which she criticized Bollywood celebrities for their silence regarding ‘Operation Sindoor’—a military operation undertaken by the Indian Armed Forces against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

In the video, Panoli expressed strong opinions, calling out several public figures for allegedly not acknowledging the efforts of the Indian military. However, the video quickly drew criticism as many perceived her remarks to be derogatory towards a specific religious community and the Prophet Muhammad. The situation escalated rapidly, with social media users demanding action, claiming the video promoted communal disharmony and religious hatred.

Although Panoli deleted the video shortly after posting it and issued an unconditional apology, the damage was already done. She was arrested by the Kolkata Police in Gurugram, Haryana, and brought to Kolkata on transit remand. Amidst the backlash, Panoli has received support from actress and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut. Ranaut publicly defended her, stating that while Panoli's remarks may have been unpleasant or misjudged, they do not justify the harsh legal actions being taken against her. Ranaut emphasized that young individuals should not be subjected to “bullying or harassment” for speaking their minds, especially when they have apologized for their statements. She called for Panoli's immediate release and urged for a more balanced approach to dealing with such situations.
