Who Is Sharmistha Panoli? The Influencer Supported by Kangana Ranaut After Her Arrest Over 'Operation Sindoor' Remarks

Sharmistha Panoli, a 22-year-old law student and social media influencer based in Pune, recently found herself at the center of a nationwide controversy. Known for her outspoken views on current affairs, Panoli gained significant attention after uploading a video to Instagram on May 14, 2025, in which she criticized Bollywood celebrities for their silence regarding ‘Operation Sindoor’—a military operation undertaken by the Indian Armed Forces against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

In the video, Panoli expressed strong opinions, calling out several public figures for allegedly not acknowledging the efforts of the Indian military. However, the video quickly drew criticism as many perceived her remarks to be derogatory towards a specific religious community and the Prophet Muhammad. The situation escalated rapidly, with social media users demanding action, claiming the video promoted communal disharmony and religious hatred.

Although Panoli deleted the video shortly after posting it and issued an unconditional apology, the damage was already done. The clip had gone viral, spreading across platforms and drawing the attention of law enforcement authorities. She was arrested by the Kolkata Police in Gurugram, Haryana, and brought to Kolkata on transit remand. She now faces serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including promoting enmity between communities, hurting religious sentiments, and making inflammatory statements intended to provoke unrest.

Amidst the backlash, Panoli has received support from actress and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut. Ranaut publicly defended her, stating that while Panoli's remarks may have been unpleasant or misjudged, they do not justify the harsh legal actions being taken against her. Ranaut emphasized that young individuals should not be subjected to “bullying or harassment” for speaking their minds, especially when they have apologized for their statements. She called for Panoli's immediate release and urged for a more balanced approach to dealing with such situations.

The incident has stirred debate across social media, with the hashtag #ReleaseSharmistha trending on various platforms. Supporters of Panoli argue that her right to free speech is being curtailed and that legal responses to online content should be proportionate. Others, however, insist that her video crossed a line and could incite communal tensions in an already sensitive environment.

This case highlights the complex relationship between freedom of speech, religious sensitivity, and the responsibilities that come with online influence. While social media provides a platform for open dialogue and dissent, it also requires creators to be cautious and respectful in their communications—particularly in a diverse country like India.

As the legal proceedings continue, the nation remains divided on whether Panoli's arrest was a necessary measure or an excessive response to an individual’s expression of opinion. The outcome of her case may well influence how similar situations are handled in the future, setting a precedent for the balance between personal expression and public responsibility in the digital age.
