Ted Sarandos Reflects on Bond with Shah Rukh Khan, Praises Heeramandi

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently opened up about his close bond with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, revealing how the two instantly connected during Sarandos’ first trip to India in 2017. In an interview reflecting on Netflix's journey in India, Sarandos shared heartwarming memories of his interaction with the actor and expressed deep admiration for Indian storytelling, particularly praising Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest web series, Heeramandi.

Sarandos recalled that his maiden visit to India came just before Netflix launched its first Indian original series, Sacred Games, in 2018. During that visit, Shah Rukh Khan graciously hosted a dinner in his honour. Sarandos described how their personalities and energies aligned instantly. “We hit it off immediately,” he said, emphasizing how natural and warm their connection was from the very beginning. What started as a formal meeting soon evolved into a lasting friendship.

Their bond deepened over the years, with Sarandos later visiting India with his wife. He mentioned how spending time with Khan felt equally special whether in Mumbai or Los Angeles. When SRK’s son Aryan Khan was studying in the U.S., the families stayed connected even across continents. Sarandos highlighted the unique cultural warmth of India, saying that having dinner in India was an experience unmatched elsewhere.

Alongside his recollections about Khan, Sarandos also discussed the evolving Indian entertainment landscape. He praised Indian creators for their boldness and creative ambition, citing Bhansali’s period drama Heeramandi as a standout example. The series, rich in visual storytelling and thematic depth, has generated widespread attention and acclaim since its release on Netflix. Sarandos commended it as one of the most creatively daring and visually stunning shows he’s seen on the platform.

The Netflix executive acknowledged the growing global appetite for Indian content, applauding the industry's willingness to take artistic risks. He emphasized that series like Heeramandi signal a bold new era for Indian storytelling, where tradition and modernity coalesce beautifully on screen.

Shah Rukh Khan, meanwhile, continues to enjoy a remarkable career resurgence. After a successful 2023 with back-to-back hits such as Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki, Khan is now working on his next project titled King. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the action-packed film will also star his daughter Suhana Khan and actor Abhishek Bachchan. The movie has already created a buzz among fans and industry insiders.

Sarandos’ reflections underscore not just the power of global content but also the friendships and mutual respect that develop through creative collaborations. His admiration for Shah Rukh Khan and Indian creators speaks volumes about the cultural bridges being built through storytelling. As Netflix continues to expand its Indian offerings, the platform’s strong ties with the industry and icons like SRK seem poised to lead the way in shaping a new era of global entertainment.
