Suniel Shetty Recalls Rejecting 'Border' Over Rumors About JP Dutta's Temper

Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty recently revealed that he initially declined the role of Bhairav Singh in JP Dutta's 1997 war film Border due to concerns about the director's reputed temper. In an interview with Radio Nasha, Shetty explained that he had heard stories about Dutta being a strict director who could be verbally abusive on set. Given his own hot-headed nature, Shetty feared potential clashes, stating, "If he abuses me, I might raise my hand." 

Despite his reservations, Dutta was determined to cast Shetty and sought assistance from Bharat Shah, who knew Shetty's mother-in-law. Through her intervention, Shetty was persuaded to reconsider. He agreed to the role with the condition that he would leave the project if any disrespectful behavior occurred. Fortunately, Shetty and Dutta developed a strong rapport from the outset, and the actor expressed deep fondness for the director, noting that Dutta continued to cast him even during challenging times in his career. 

Border, set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, became a significant success and remains one of Bollywood's most acclaimed war films. A sequel, Border 2, directed by Anurag Singh and featuring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Ahan Shetty, is scheduled for release on January 23, 2026. 

Reflecting on his experience, Shetty emphasized the importance of not letting others' opinions cloud one's judgment. He acknowledged that his initial decision was influenced by hearsay rather than personal experience. This episode taught him to make decisions based on direct interactions and personal assessments. Business Today

In a separate interview, Shetty recounted visiting Kargil during the 1999 war, where he met a young soldier who recognized him as Bhairav Singh and recited his character's war cry. This encounter deeply moved Shetty, reinforcing the impact of his role in Border and its resonance with the armed forces. The Indian Express
