In a move that screams more PR stunt than genuine camaraderie, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly recently hosted Bollywood actors Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur for a private dinner at his residence in Kolkata. The duo was in town promoting their upcoming anthology film Metro… In Dino, and this orchestrated dinner setup seems to blur the line between star power and subtle marketing manipulation.
At first glance, the story reads like a heartwarming moment — icons from cricket and cinema bonding over classic Bengali cuisine. Reports mention a delectable spread including chingri malaikari, aloo posto, and mishti doi, and yes, Ganguly’s mother was also present at the dinner table, adding a homely touch. But the larger question looms: was this just another desperate Bollywood tactic to grab eyeballs before the film’s release?
Sara and Aditya are not exactly a blockbuster pair. While both have their share of fan followings, neither has been consistent in delivering hits. So, their Kolkata tour — capped off by a dinner with “Dada” himself — reeks more of a publicity ploy than a natural coincidence. It’s worth questioning how often a national sports icon hosts film stars who are simply in town for promotions.
Interestingly, Ganguly even praised the trailer of Metro… In Dino and wished the cast luck, saying the film would do well. Coming from a man known more for straight-talking than sugar-coating, this endorsement feels unusually polished. Is cricket’s prince now dabbling in the politics of Bollywood alliances?
The actors also made rounds at Eden Gardens and visited a café to meet fans. Again, everything seemed far too curated — from the locations to the smiles to the dialogues with the press. The entire tour felt like a well-rehearsed campaign, not genuine enthusiasm for storytelling or connection with audiences.
Let’s not forget that Metro… In Dino is trying to live up to its predecessor Life in a... Metro, a critically acclaimed film by Anurag Basu that dealt with raw, emotional narratives. Its sequel, however, is riding heavily on the shoulders of PR gimmicks and celebrity endorsements — with very little buzz around the actual content of the film. The presence of respected actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Anupam Kher may bring weight, but even their credibility can’t shield the film from the apparent lack of originality in its promotions.
The Ganguly dinner spectacle, thus, serves as a prime example of Bollywood’s growing obsession with optics over substance. When film promotion starts resembling a VIP networking dinner more than a celebration of cinema, the audience is bound to feel disconnected.
In the end, the question isn't about food, fanfare, or famous faces — it's about whether Bollywood will ever return to authenticity, or continue using cricket legends and curated moments to fill seats in theatres.
