Businessman Raj Kundra, husband of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, has once again found himself in the middle of controversy. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has recorded his statement in a massive Rs 60 crore cheating case, sparking intense debate across the industry. While Kundra faces direct questioning, Shilpa Shetty’s name has also been dragged into the complaint—but investigators have clarified that no summons have been issued to her so far.
Raj Kundra Under the Scanner
According to officials, Kundra was grilled for over five hours by the EOW. The interrogation was held discreetly at an undisclosed location to keep the media away. The case stems from allegations made by businessman Deepak Kothari, who claims he invested around Rs 60.4 crore in a now-defunct company, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, which was once associated with Kundra. Kothari alleges the money was siphoned off, leaving him cheated.
The scandal has quickly become a media frenzy, not only because of the huge sum involved but also because of the celebrity status of those connected.
Shilpa Shetty’s Name in the Complaint
The controversy deepens as Shilpa Shetty, though not interrogated yet, has been named as a co-accused. Officials say they are still gathering documents, testimonies, and verifying witnesses before deciding whether to summon her. This has raised questions: if her name appears in the complaint, why delay her questioning? Some critics argue that the selective approach shows how celebrity influence might be affecting the pace of the investigation.
Adding fuel to speculation, a Lookout Circular has reportedly been issued against both Kundra and Shetty, meaning their foreign travel is now restricted. Still, the lack of a summons for Shilpa raises eyebrows. Is the system protecting her, or is it simply being cautious until stronger evidence is gathered?
Raj Kundra’s Defense
Kundra’s legal team has dismissed the allegations as baseless. They argue that the financial dealings in question were old business transactions and not criminal in nature. According to them, the complaint is nothing more than an attempt to malign Kundra’s reputation. However, critics point out that this is not the first time Kundra has been embroiled in legal trouble—recall his controversial involvement in the pornography case, which had already dented his public image.
A Case of Celebrity Privilege?
The incident has ignited heated discussions about celebrity privilege in India. Ordinary businessmen facing such charges would have been arrested or at least summoned swiftly. Yet, in this case, authorities appear cautious, almost hesitant, to take any direct action against Shilpa Shetty. This double standard has not gone unnoticed by the public.
Why This Case Matters
This Rs 60 crore fraud case is more than just a financial dispute—it’s a test of how the justice system handles high-profile figures. The outcome could set a precedent for whether Bollywood’s elite are treated like ordinary citizens under the law.
For now, Raj Kundra remains under investigation, Shilpa Shetty waits in the wings, and the public is left questioning whether money and fame can still buy time, if not freedom, in India’s legal system.
