Priya Kapur’s Bid to Seal Sunjay Kapur’s ₹30,000 Crore Estate Sparks Delhi HC Alarm

In the high-stakes inheritance battle over the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s estimated ₹30,000 crore estate, a dramatic twist has emerged: his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, has petitioned the Delhi High Court to keep asset disclosures under intense confidentiality—requiring Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) and sealed covers. The court, however, has flagged serious concerns about such secrecy in a case involving multiple heirs and a public will dispute.

The Confidentiality Plea and Court Pushback

Priya Kapur has sought permission to submit the details of Sunjay Kapur’s personal assets and liabilities in a sealed envelope, instead of public disclosure, arguing that full transparency could expose sensitive financial information to misuse and cybersecurity risks. She has also demanded that Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, and Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, sign NDAs before accessing any documentation.

However, Justice Jyoti Singh and the bench have questioned the legitimacy of such an approach, raising vital issues about fairness and access to justice. The court observed that if critical details remain hidden, the opposing parties cannot meaningfully respond or challenge the claims. “The whole suit cannot be in a sealed cover,” remarked the judge during proceedings.

Children Claim ‘Money Wiped Out’

Adding fuel to the fire, Karisma Kapoor’s children, through legal counsel, told the court that their father’s disclosed bank accounts had reportedly been “wiped out,” raising suspicions of tampering or mismanagement. They questioned how funds could vanish so completely and demanded full access to all financial records.

The heirs are also challenging the validity of a March 21, 2025 will, which allegedly grants the entire personal estate to Priya Kapur. They claim it was produced under suspicious circumstances, hiding for weeks before being presented, and not duly probated or shared publicly.

A War Over ₹30,000 Crores

The core of the fight is not just about money, but about control, legacy, and legal redress. Sunjay Kapur’s children from his marriage with Karisma Kapoor assert that as class-I heirs, they deserve a rightful share. They have sought interim relief to freeze assets and demand a judicial partition of the estate.

On the other hand, Priya insists she is not resisting disclosure in principle but insists on protective legal mechanisms. She claims the beneficiaries have already received assets worth ₹1,900 crore via family trusts, suggesting fairness in her position.

Sanjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, has also stepped into the legal fray, seeking complete access to the will and objecting to decisions made in secret.

Why It Matters

This isn’t just a family feud—it’s a potential legal precedent. The court’s decision on whether estates of such magnitude can be shielded by NDAs or secrecy orders could reshape inheritance law in high-value cases. If sealed covers become acceptable, heirs may no longer have the transparency they need to challenge wills or detect fraud.

Public perception also weighs heavily. With Bollywood names involved, the scandal will influence how celebrity estates and wills are handled in media and courts going forward.

The next hearing will be closely watched. Whether the court sides with transparency or upholds confidentiality will have repercussions far beyond the Kapur family.
