Param Sundari Flops on Day 1 — A Third of Saiyaara’s Smash Start!

Bollywood’s much-hyped rom-com Param Sundari, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, has delivered a shocking box-office blow. The film earned just ₹7.25 crore worldwide on Day 1, a figure that looks pale when compared to the record-breaking opening of Saiyaara, which made nearly ₹30 crore on its debut. The contrast has set tongues wagging about whether Bollywood’s obsession with star power is failing to connect with audiences.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Param Sundari opened to high expectations, with flashy promotions and heavy media buzz. Yet, the opening collection of just over ₹7 crore is being termed as underwhelming by industry insiders. To put it into perspective, Saiyaara—featuring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda—tripled that figure on its first day, proving that audiences are rewarding freshness over recycled Bollywood formulas.

Trade experts suggest that the film’s modest occupancy in theatres and lack of repeat value are strong indicators that the weekend will not see much growth. The underperformance has raised questions about whether Bollywood rom-coms still hold the same charm in an era where audiences have instant access to diverse global content.

Star Power vs. Content: Who Wins?

This failure is particularly embarrassing for the film’s lead stars. Sidharth Malhotra, who hasn’t delivered a significant solo hit since Kapoor & Sons back in 2016, was banking on Param Sundari to revive his box-office credibility. On the other hand, Janhvi Kapoor, who recently found recognition with Devara Part 1, was expected to solidify her position in the Hindi film industry. Unfortunately, neither actor has emerged a winner here.

What stings more is that Janhvi missed the chance to score her second-strongest opener, while Sidharth continues his streak of weak box-office outings. This raises the uncomfortable question: are Bollywood stars overvalued when audiences clearly prefer fresh talent and original storytelling?

Bollywood’s Creative Laziness Exposed

The film’s failure isn’t just about money—it reflects a deeper crisis in Bollywood. Instead of reinventing the rom-com space, Param Sundari chose to rehash old tropes: glitzy songs, predictable romance, and glossy cinematography without depth. Meanwhile, films like Saiyaara, made with less star power but stronger writing, are stealing the spotlight.

This is not an isolated case. Recent flops across genres show that audiences are no longer falling for formula-driven cinema. The Indian audience today is exposed to K-dramas, Hollywood rom-coms, and powerful regional films. In such a competitive environment, Bollywood’s laziness is nothing short of self-sabotage.

The Wake-Up Call

Param Sundari’s weak start should serve as a wake-up call for the industry. Audiences are smarter, hungrier for novelty, and no longer dazzled by big names alone. If filmmakers continue to play safe, Bollywood risks losing its dominance over its own audience.

The message from Day 1 is clear: Bollywood must evolve or perish. Star-studded flops like Param Sundari prove that the era of blind faith in celebrity-driven films is coming to an end.
