Bollywood actor Ishaan Khatter recently shared insights into his experience working with veteran actress Tabu in Mira Nair’s period drama series A Suitable Boy. Based on Vikram Seth's acclaimed novel, the BBC and Netflix-backed series explores the intersecting lives of several characters in post-independence India. Among the most talked-about storylines is the unconventional romance between Maan Kapoor, played by Ishaan Khatter, and Saeeda Bai, a courtesan portrayed by Tabu.
In a candid interview, Ishaan called Tabu “naughty” and praised her vibrant personality on set. He described their working dynamic as smooth and respectful, especially during the intimate scenes which could have been challenging given the characters' emotional complexity and significant age gap. However, Ishaan emphasized that these scenes unfolded naturally, crediting Tabu’s professionalism and warmth for creating a comfortable space for him to perform freely.
"She is a warm, playful person, and we got along really well," Ishaan said. "Those scenes happened quite seamlessly because we had a great understanding and trust. There was no awkwardness or hesitation." He noted that Tabu’s ability to bring both grace and depth to her role helped him respond more honestly in his performance. Their chemistry, he said, was rooted in strong communication and mutual respect, which allowed even the most intimate moments to be handled with authenticity.
Ishaan also touched upon the narrative context of their relationship in A Suitable Boy. The story does not shy away from acknowledging the age difference between Maan and Saeeda Bai, which adds depth and realism to their interactions. Rather than focusing on physical intimacy alone, their scenes are layered with emotional tension, longing, and a sense of societal transgression. Ishaan appreciated how this complexity was translated onscreen and believed it was essential in portraying the true spirit of the original novel.
Speaking about the challenges of portraying such a nuanced character, Ishaan remarked that it was a valuable learning experience to work opposite someone as seasoned as Tabu. "She made me feel very secure. There was a certain rhythm to our scenes that came from her incredible ability to be present and generous as an actor," he said. He described working with her as both inspiring and enriching, crediting her for helping him grow in confidence and maturity during the shoot.
The Suitable Boy was lauded for its visual storytelling, strong performances, and attention to historical and cultural detail. Ishaan and Tabu's onscreen pairing was especially praised, with critics and audiences alike highlighting the emotional vulnerability and quiet passion in their performances.
In retrospect, Ishaan Khatter’s reflections offer a deeper appreciation for the effort and artistry involved in bringing complex relationships to life on screen. His comments underscore the significance of trust, preparation, and chemistry in portraying intimate scenes with sensitivity. With this role, Ishaan not only demonstrated his range as an actor but also his willingness to challenge himself alongside one of India’s finest performers.
