Housefull 5 Director Tarun Mansukhani Recalls Shah Rukh Khan’s Advice: ‘Setting the Shot is Just 1% of Filmmaking’

As anticipation builds around the release of Housefull 5, director Tarun Mansukhani has opened up about a valuable lesson he learned from superstar Shah Rukh Khan early in his filmmaking career. This insight, as Mansukhani recalls, reshaped his understanding of direction and has continued to guide him through the many stages of his career.

Before becoming a director himself, Mansukhani worked as an assistant and associate director on several iconic Bollywood films under Dharma Productions, including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. It was during this period that he had the opportunity to observe and interact closely with Shah Rukh Khan on set. Just before Mansukhani began shooting his directorial debut Dostana in 2008, Khan offered him a piece of advice that has stayed with him ever since.

Shah Rukh Khan told him, “What you think is direction—like putting the camera here, or setting the shot—is just 1% of filmmaking. 99% of your job is managing people.” This advice was a revelation for Mansukhani, shifting his focus from only the technical aspects of directing to the equally crucial human element of the craft. According to him, this understanding helped him immensely in navigating the unpredictable and often chaotic world of filmmaking.

Mansukhani also recounted how Shah Rukh Khan wasn’t just an actor on set but often took on additional roles behind the camera. He recalled a specific instance where the team was shooting in the rain, and Khan stepped in like an assistant director to speed up the process and ensure that the shoot was completed in time.
