Akshay Oberoi Criticizes Bollywood for Overlooking Support from the Queer Community

Actor Akshay Oberoi has openly criticized Bollywood for failing to acknowledge the unwavering support it receives from the LGBTQ+ community. In a recent interview, Oberoi emphasized the industry's lack of recognition for its queer audience, especially during Pride Month, and called for more inclusive representation in mainstream cinema.

Oberoi, who portrayed a closeted gay character named Rohit Shanbagh in the third season of the web series Inside Edge, shared that the role offered him a profound insight into the struggles faced by the queer community. He noted that while the entertainment industry often benefits from the patronage of LGBTQ+ audiences, it seldom reciprocates with meaningful representation or acknowledgment.

"Bollywood doesn’t acknowledge it, but a lot of the love we get is from the queer community," Oberoi stated. "As someone who truly values love and identity in all forms, I’ve never been bothered about the sexuality of my characters. For me, it’s about telling human stories, and every human deserves to be seen."

Reflecting on his experience playing Rohit, Oberoi described the role as both overwhelming and fulfilling. He highlighted the internal conflict and courage required to portray a character grappling with societal norms and personal identity. "It’s easy to play parts that fall into the typical hero template. But when you get to play a character that challenges societal norms, you grow not just as an actor but as a person," he remarked.

Oberoi's comments come at a time when Bollywood's portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters is under increased scrutiny. While there have been strides in queer representation with films like Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, and Badhaai Do, critics argue that these narratives often lack authenticity and depth. Many of these films are penned and directed by individuals outside the queer community, leading to portrayals that sometimes miss the nuances of LGBTQ
