Aamir Khan Says Sitaare Zameen Par Did “20 Times More Business” on YouTube, Rejects Massive OTT Deal

Bollywood’s perfectionist Aamir Khan has once again disrupted the film industry’s comfort zone. The actor-filmmaker revealed that his latest film Sitaare Zameen Par earned twenty times more business through its YouTube pay-per-view release compared to what was expected from conventional models. Even more shocking, Aamir admitted he turned down a massive ₹125 crore OTT deal, choosing instead to charge audiences just ₹100 per view on YouTube. His move has sparked debates about the future of digital releases and whether Bollywood’s dependence on streaming platforms is reaching a breaking point.

YouTube vs OTT: Aamir’s Gamble Pays Off

Aamir confessed that he was initially nervous about bypassing the traditional OTT path. The industry norm today is to rush films to OTT platforms within six to eight weeks of their theatrical release. But according to him, this trend damages cinema. A film that generates good word-of-mouth deserves a longer life in theatres before being dumped on streaming apps.

By experimenting with YouTube’s pay-per-view model, Sitaare Zameen Par found renewed success. Instead of being swallowed up in a crowded OTT library, the film had direct visibility, accessibility, and surprisingly stronger financial returns. Aamir’s calculation that people would pay ₹100 per view proved correct — and, by his own account, the film did 20 times more business than its normal run.

Why Reject ₹125 Crore?

Turning down ₹125 crore sounds unthinkable, but Aamir insists it was a conscious decision. He wanted control over how the film reached audiences rather than handing it over to an OTT giant. According to him, YouTube’s reach is far wider than most subscription-based platforms in India, making it not just a safe bet but a smarter one.

He also stressed that this model builds a more direct relationship between the filmmaker and the audience. For him, it was not about chasing the biggest upfront cheque but about building a sustainable business that values both theatre performance and digital longevity.

Critics Question the Move

While many hail Aamir as a game-changer, critics say this strategy works only for him. He is one of the few stars who commands immense trust and curiosity from audiences. Lesser-known filmmakers and mid-level actors cannot afford to take such risks, nor can they expect people to pay per view at the same scale.

Some industry insiders argue that OTT deals provide stability and financial security. By rejecting a guaranteed ₹125 crore, Aamir may be setting an unrealistic benchmark for others. If more producers follow his example and fail, it could destabilize smaller films that rely on OTT for survival.

Will This Redefine Bollywood Economics?

Aamir Khan’s bold move has opened a new debate: should Bollywood continue to bow down to OTT platforms, or will stars begin to experiment with direct-to-audience releases? His success with YouTube shows there is an appetite for alternative models. But whether this becomes a sustainable trend or remains a one-off success tied to Aamir’s personal brand remains to be seen.

For now, one thing is clear — Aamir Khan has once again proven that he plays by his own rules, and Bollywood is being forced to take notice.
