In a chilling incident that has shocked Punjab and the wider online community, two individuals have been arrested for the murder of 25-year-old social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, popularly known as Kamal Kaur or “Bhabhi” on social platforms. The young influencer was found dead inside a car parked in the premises of Adesh Medical University in Bathinda on June 11. The murder, allegedly triggered by objections to her online content, has exposed the dark side of growing digital influence and intolerance.
The arrested suspects, identified as Jaspreet Manro and Nimratjeet Singh, are said to have executed the crime under the direction of the main conspirator, Amritpal Singh Mehron, also known as Amritpal Manro. Amritpal is currently absconding, and a manhunt has been launched by Punjab Police to track him down. The investigation so far suggests that Kanchan was lured to Bathinda on June 9 by Amritpal under the guise of collaborating on a promotional car video.
Once she arrived in Bathinda, the situation turned grim. Jaspreet and Nimratjeet reportedly confronted her, accusing her of posting vulgar content on social media. They were particularly offended by her use of the surname “Kaur,” which they claimed was disrespectful in the context of her videos. When she refused to comply with their demand to stop using the name and change the nature of her content, the confrontation escalated to violence.
Police reports suggest that Kanchan was strangled at a different location, and her lifeless body was later placed in the car, which was left in the university parking area to mislead authorities and delay identification. The suspects tried to cover up their tracks, but CCTV footage, call records, and digital forensic evidence led the police to the two arrested individuals. The hunt for the mastermind, Amritpal, continues, and authorities believe his arrest will uncover deeper motivations and possibly more people involved in the crime.
This tragic murder has sparked outrage among netizens and citizens alike. Influencers and civil society members have expressed grief and anger over the violent response to creative expression, regardless of its tone or style. Many have emphasized that no form of content should ever justify such an extreme and heinous act.
Kanchan Kumari had a growing presence on social media, where she engaged audiences with humorous and sometimes bold content. While not everyone agreed with her style, her popularity reflected the freedom of expression that social platforms offer. Her untimely death has now become a symbol of the increasing risks faced by public figures in the digital age, especially women.
Punjab Police have assured the public that justice will be served. A dedicated team is working to apprehend the absconding mastermind and bring closure to the case. The murder has raised urgent concerns about online harassment, societal intolerance, and the need for stronger protective measures for digital content creators.
The case continues to be closely watched, as the investigation unfolds and the state grapples with the implications of this tragic and senseless loss.
