Zoya Akhtar Says ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ Sequel Is Being Worked On, but There’s One Big Condition

Fifteen years after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara sent Arjun, Kabir and Imran on a life-changing road trip through Spain, Zoya Akhtar has given the clearest indication yet that she is seriously exploring where those characters could be today.

The filmmaker has confirmed that she and longtime writing partner Reema Kagti are working on the possibility of a sequel to the 2011 film.

But there is an important distinction between developing an idea and officially putting a sequel into production.

“We are on it,” Zoya said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India. She immediately added a note of caution, explaining that they do not yet know whether the process will lead to a film.

For Zoya, the deciding factor appears to be whether she and Kagti can find an organic reason to revisit these characters after 15 years rather than making a sequel simply because audiences want one.

Zoya wants to find where the characters are today

The challenge isn't merely finding another destination for the friends.

Zoya explained that the creative process involves figuring out whether they can reach a place that feels right while “catching up with these characters today.”

That distinction is particularly important for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

The original film followed three childhood friends Arjun, Kabir and Imran played by Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar respectively.

Their trip across Spain wasn't simply a holiday. Each man entered the journey carrying a different unresolved problem.

Arjun's obsession with work had overtaken his ability to enjoy his life. Kabir was preparing to marry Natasha despite uncertainty about the relationship. Imran was carrying questions about his biological father.

The adventure activities woven through the trip deep-sea diving, skydiving and the Running of the Bulls functioned alongside those emotional journeys rather than merely providing picturesque locations.

A sequel therefore faces a more difficult creative question than simply reuniting the trio: what problems would these men be confronting in middle age?

That appears to be the question Zoya and Kagti are currently trying to answer.

Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay have not been officially announced for a sequel

The original trio remain inseparable from discussions about another ZNMD, but their return should not yet be presented as confirmed casting.

Zoya's latest comments establish that work is being done on the sequel idea. They do not amount to an official cast announcement, production schedule or shooting confirmation.

The same applies to Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin, who played Laila and Natasha in the original.

No complete returning cast has officially been announced.

That restraint is particularly important because enthusiasm surrounding the original actors has already produced one major misunderstanding.

That 2025 reunion wasn't a ‘ZNMD 2’ teaser

In 2025, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol reunited on screen for an advertisement.

For fans who had spent years hoping for a sequel, the reunion looked suspiciously like the beginning of one.

Zoya has now recalled that some viewers genuinely believed the commercial was a trailer for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2. When they discovered it wasn't, she received angry messages from disappointed fans.

The episode inadvertently demonstrated how much audience affection remains attached to the original trio.

It also helps explain why the latest development needs precise wording. This time, Zoya really is working on a possible continuation but she still isn't promising audiences that the film will definitely reach production.

A sequel has been discussed for years

The idea of returning to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara isn't new.

Zoya and Reema discussed the possibility while celebrating the film's tenth anniversary in 2021, demonstrating that conversations about revisiting its world predate the current announcement.

Over the years, however, Zoya's position has consistently depended on finding a worthwhile reason to make another film rather than treating the title as an automatic franchise.

The latest comments represent progress because she is no longer merely answering a hypothetical question about whether a sequel would be possible. She and Kagti are actively working on it.

What remains unknown is whether that development work will produce a screenplay they believe justifies bringing the characters back.

Why ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ still matters 15 years later

Released in July 2011, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara brought together Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay alongside Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin.

Zoya directed the film, while she and Reema Kagti developed its story. Farhan wrote its dialogue.

The film combined friendship, romance, travel and questions about work, mortality and personal freedom within the structure of a bachelor trip through Spain.

Its impact also extended into awards season. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara won Best Film and Zoya won Best Director at the 57th Filmfare Awards.

More importantly for a potential sequel, the characters were left at points in their lives where continuing their stories is possible without undoing the original ending.

Fifteen years creates enough distance for their priorities, relationships and friendships to have changed substantially.

That is also what makes a sequel creatively risky.

For now, there is no officially announced shooting date, release date or production schedule for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2.

There is also no officially announced plot.

Reports presenting the sequel as ready to begin filming therefore go beyond what Zoya has actually confirmed.

The current position is more specific — and more interesting: Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti are trying to find a story that allows them to revisit the characters in the present day.

If they find it, audiences may finally get the reunion they have spent 15 years requesting.

If they don't, Zoya's comments suggest that nostalgia alone won't be enough reason to make the film.

A Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara sequel has an advantage most sequels would envy: audiences already want to know what happened to its characters. But that affection is also its biggest creative risk.

The original worked because Spain and the adventure sports were vehicles for three personal crises rather than the entire point of the film. Simply sending Arjun, Kabir and Imran on another expensive holiday would recreate the imagery without necessarily continuing the story.

Fifteen years, however, creates genuinely new territory. Careers, marriages, parenthood, ageing friendships and the difference between freedom in your thirties and freedom in your forties could all naturally change what a “seize the day” story means. None of those possibilities has been announced as the plot, but they illustrate why Zoya's insistence on finding where the characters are today matters more than finding another picturesque road trip.
