Yami Gautam Dhar Turns Mysterious Bride in ‘Nayyi Navelli’; Fantasy Family Entertainer Sets Dussehra Release

Yami Gautam Dhar is stepping into a rather unusual family with Nayyi Navelli, a fantasy entertainer that turns the familiar idea of the perfect new bride into a supernatural mystery.

Amazon MGM Studios and Colour Yellow have set the film for a nationwide theatrical release on October 16, 2026, positioning it as a Dussehra-season family outing.

Directed by Balaji Mohan, Nayyi Navelli is produced by Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma. The film is written by Sharma alongside Divy Nidhi Sharma, while G.V. Prakash Kumar has composed the music.

The new announcement also gives audiences a clearer idea of the film's playful genre mix: this isn't being presented as a straightforward horror film, but as a combination of fantasy, humour, adventure and family drama.

Yami plays a bride who may be hiding something supernatural

At the centre of Nayyi Navelli is a seemingly ideal bride played by Yami.

The story is set within a chaotic household in Meerut. Her arrival unexpectedly transforms the dysfunctional home, bringing a degree of order and happiness to the family.

There is, however, one major complication.

Her brother-in-law becomes suspicious of this miraculous transformation and begins to wonder whether his apparently perfect bhabhi might actually be a daayan a witch.

The premise allows the filmmakers to place a supernatural idea inside a recognisable North Indian family environment rather than building the film around a conventional haunted-house setup.

The newly unveiled poster leans heavily into that contrast. Yami appears in traditional attire while confronting fantastical creatures, signalling that the character's identity may be considerably more complicated than the family's initial perception of her.

Exactly what she is — and whether the brother-in-law's suspicions are justified is something the makers are understandably keeping under wraps.

Aanand L Rai says Yami was an ‘instinctive choice’

Aanand L. Rai has described the project as a story built around fantasy, humor, and adventure while retaining a family-centered core.

Discussing Yami's casting, Rai called her an “instinctive choice”, saying she brought the warmth and mischief required for the character.

That combination appears central to the film's hook.

The audience needs to see Yami's character as convincing enough in the role of an ideal daughter-in-law for the family's transformation to work while simultaneously questioning whether something supernatural is hiding beneath that image.

For Yami, that offers a role built around ambiguity rather than immediately identifying her character as either the heroine or supernatural threat.

‘Nayyi Navelli’ was first unveiled in March

Although the October release date is new, the film itself was announced earlier this year.

Nayyi Navelli was introduced as part of Amazon's 2026 content presentation in March, when Yami described her role as “hatke” and spoke about being attracted to original ideas.

At that stage, the film was confirmed for a theatrical release followed by streaming on Prime Video, but its cinema release date had not yet been announced.

The August campaign therefore represents the next stage of the rollout rather than the project's first announcement.

It also confirms a major festive slot: October 16, around the Dussehra period.

Balaji Mohan directs, while Aanand L Rai produces

There is an important credit distinction with Nayyi Navelli.

Aanand L Rai is closely associated with the film through Colour Yellow, but he is not directing it.

The director is Balaji Mohan, whose filmography includes Maari, Maari 2 and Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi.

Himanshu Sharma and Divy Nidhi Sharma have written the film, while Rai and Himanshu Sharma serve as producers through Colour Yellow. Amazon MGM Studios is collaborating with the production company on the project.

It marks the first collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Colour Yellow on a feature of this kind.

Theatrical first, Prime Video later

Nayyi Navelli is also part of a distribution model Amazon has increasingly used for selected Indian films: a theatrical window followed by availability on Prime Video.

The film will first reach cinemas on October 16 before eventually moving to the streaming platform.

A specific Prime Video premiere date has not been announced, so any OTT date circulating before an official confirmation should be treated cautiously.

For now, the focus is firmly on positioning Nayyi Navelli as a festive theatrical entertainer.

Nayyi Navelli becomes more interesting when viewed as a family fantasy rather than simply another entry in Hindi cinema's increasingly crowded supernatural-comedy space. Its premise uses something distinctly domestic the arrival of a new bahu and the way she changes a household before inserting the possibility that the seemingly perfect family member might not be entirely human.

Yami Gautam is also an interesting fit for that ambiguity. Several of her recent films have relied on withholding important information about her character and then gradually changing the audience's understanding of her motivations. Nayyi Navelli appears capable of using that quality in a much lighter, more fantastical setting.

The October 16 slot also indicates the scale of the makers' ambitions. Amazon MGM Studios and Colour Yellow are explicitly positioning the film as a Dussehra theatrical experience rather than treating cinemas simply as a stop before streaming. Whether that genre mixture connects with family audiences will ultimately depend on how effectively the film balances its supernatural premise with the household comedy at its centre.
