When Being a Good Friend Backfires: How Chandan Prabhakar Lost His Job to Kapil Sharma

The Audition That Started It All

The story begins during the audition rounds for the smash-hit reality show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. Chandan Prabhakar and another comedian, Rajeev Thakur, gave it their all during the Punjab auditions and successfully secured their spots.

Kapil Sharma, however, faced a stinging rejection in that exact same round.

But Kapil wasn't ready to throw in the towel. Determined to make it onto the show, he decided to travel to Delhi to audition again. Even though Chandan had a scheduled shoot since he was already officially cast, Kapil insisted his friend tag along for moral support. Like a true friend, Chandan quietly slipped away to Delhi with him. Kapil auditioned once more, but again, he didn't get an immediate callback.

"You Can Go Back Now"

When Chandan and Rajeev finally joined the show's set, they simply couldn't let it go. Convinced that the producers were missing out on a massive talent, the duo started aggressively lobbying for Kapil. They repeatedly badgered the assistant directors and makers, insisting they had made a huge mistake and needed to give Kapil another chance.

Their relentless nagging actually worked. The makers relented and called Kapil in to join the cast.

But here is where the story turns into a real-life sitcom script. The moment Kapil arrived on set, ready to shine, the makers turned to the guy who had been fighting for him and dropped a bomb.

"You can go back now," they told Chandan. "Kapil Sharma has arrived."

Just like that, Chandan was fired. He had to pack his bags and give up his hard-earned spot so the friend he advocated for could take the stage.

No Hard Feelings

You would think getting ousted from a major television show because of your best friend would cause a massive rift, but not for these two.

After the heartbreaking exit, Chandan who actually holds a degree in mechanical engineering went back to working a regular day job at a software company. It would take a little while before he decided to give comedy another serious shot.

Thankfully, the universe has a funny way of working things out. The incident didn't sour their relationship one bit. Kapil, of course, went on to become Indian television's biggest comedy star, and when it was time to build his own ensemble for Comedy Nights with Kapil and later The Kapil Sharma Show, he brought his old friend right along with him.

It’s a hilarious, slightly tragic, but ultimately heartwarming reminder that in the entertainment industry, loyalty does eventually pay off, even if it gets you fired first!
