Imran Khan’s Comeback Takes Him Back to Rom-Coms - But Adhure Hum Adhure Tum Is Built for a Different Phase of Life

More than a decade after stepping away from leading roles in Hindi cinema, Imran Khan is preparing to return to territory that once defined a significant part of his screen career: the romantic comedy.

But Adhure Hum Adhure Tum is not being positioned as an attempt to simply recreate Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, I Hate Luv Storys or the youthful romances audiences associate with him.

Imran has described his new film as a “grown-up romantic comedy” appropriate to where he is in his life today.

The film reunites him with Break Ke Baad director Danish Aslam and stars Bhumi Pednekar and Gurfateh Pirzada alongside him.

Production has been completed and the project is in post-production, but there is an important qualification for audiences waiting to watch it: Netflix has not announced an official streaming date.

Imran Khan says this was the film he had to make

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India about returning to acting, Imran described Adhure Hum Adhure Tum as the project that finally gave him a compelling reason to make another film after roughly a decade away.

His description suggests that the comeback has been designed around his current age and perspective rather than an effort to reproduce his earlier screen persona.

That approach is particularly significant because Imran became strongly associated with contemporary urban romance following his breakthrough in Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na in 2008.

Films including I Hate Luv Storys, Break Ke Baad and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan subsequently reinforced his boy-next-door romantic image.

His last film as a leading actor before the extended break was Katti Batti in 2015.

Bhumi Pednekar sees the film as an evolved version of Imran’s genre

Bhumi Pednekar has also spoken about why Imran's return feels distinctive.

During an appearance on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, Bhumi described herself as someone who had grown up watching and admiring Imran's romantic films.

More importantly, she characterised Adhure Hum Adhure Tum as belonging to the kind of romantic-comedy space associated with Imran while being more mature and evolved.

That description aligns closely with Imran's own explanation of the project.

Instead of bringing back the carefree romantic hero of the late 2000s, the film appears designed to explore relationships from a later stage of adulthood.

Break Ke Baad director Danish Aslam reunites with Imran

The film also represents a notable reunion.

Danish Aslam previously directed Imran opposite Deepika Padukone in Break Ke Baad, released in 2010.

Fifteen years after that collaboration, Aslam and Imran reunited for Adhure Hum Adhure Tum.

The upcoming film has been described as a dysfunctional romantic comedy and also features Gurfateh Pirzada, whose recent work includes Class and Call Me Bae.

Imran and Aslam are also involved as producers alongside Open Air Films.

Why did the film take longer to arrive?

The project's road to release has not been entirely straightforward.

Principal photography had been completed in 2025, and the production reportedly delivered a cut later that year. However, the film was conspicuously absent when Netflix India unveiled its major 2026 slate in February.

At the time, Variety India reported that internal changes at Netflix had contributed to uncertainty around its release schedule.

There was another development in May.

Variety India subsequently reported that the film was returning for four days of additional shooting after Netflix provided creative feedback following a viewing of the film. According to that report, Imran and Danish Aslam agreed to film additional material intended to refine the narrative.

Additional photography is not inherently unusual in filmmaking, but it explains why describing the project simply as having “wrapped” no longer captures its production history accurately.

When will Adhure Hum Adhure Tum release?

As of August 2026, there is still no officially announced premiere date.

Imran himself addressed the uncertainty during a Reddit AMA in March. He said the film was in post-production and that the team hoped it would arrive during the latter part of 2026, while making clear that the final release decision rests with Netflix.

More recently, Imran has again confirmed that the film is in post-production and is expected later this year.

Until Netflix formally announces the date, however, any specific month or day should be treated as tentative rather than confirmed.

Imran has technically already appeared on screen again

There is another useful distinction when describing Adhure Hum Adhure Tum as Imran's “comeback”.

The actor already made a special appearance in Vir Das' Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos earlier in 2026.

Adhure Hum Adhure Tum, therefore, is better described as his return to a full-fledged leading role rather than literally his first appearance on screen since Katti Batti.

That distinction may sound small, but it keeps the chronology accurate.

The Celebrity Hour Take

The most interesting element of Imran Khan's comeback is that the project does not appear to be running away from the genre audiences associate with him.

Instead, Adhure Hum Adhure Tum appears to be asking whether that screen identity can grow up alongside both the actor and the audience that watched him during the late 2000s and early 2010s.

That makes the reunion with Danish Aslam particularly appropriate. Break Ke Baad dealt with a young relationship confronting adulthood; their new collaboration arrives when Imran himself is returning to the genre from a very different stage of life.

The nostalgia surrounding his return will undoubtedly help generate curiosity. But nostalgia can only get an audience to press play. Whether Imran Khan can establish a meaningful second chapter will depend on whether the film gives viewers something more substantial than a recreation of the boy-next-door they remember.
