Akshay Kumar’s Box Office Recovery Is Taking Shape - What His Recent Films Actually Tell Us

For much of the post-pandemic period, Akshay Kumar's extraordinary release frequency was accompanied by an uncomfortable question: could one of Hindi cinema's most reliable theatrical stars find sustained box-office momentum again?

By 2026, the numbers have begun providing a clearer answer.

The strongest evidence has come from two comedy-driven releases - Bhooth Bangla and Welcome to the Jungle. Both crossed ₹100 crore net in India, while their worldwide totals went considerably higher.

But calling it a comeback requires more than pointing to one ₹150 crore headline. Akshay's recent theatrical trajectory is better understood by looking at several films together.

Bhooth Bangla delivered the clearest breakthrough

Priyadarshan's Bhooth Bangla, released on April 17, became one of the most important films in Akshay's recent box-office run.

The horror-comedy reunited the actor and Priyadarshan, whose earlier collaborations include Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhagam Bhag and Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

After a comparatively measured start, Bhooth Bangla demonstrated strong staying power.

Balaji Motion Pictures announced during the film's second week that it had crossed ₹150 crore worldwide. Its theatrical run continued well beyond that milestone.

Bollywood Hungama's final box-office tracking places the film at approximately ₹168.26 crore net in India and ₹247.27 crore worldwide.

More importantly, the publication classified the film as a Hit.

That distinction matters. Crossing ₹100 crore or ₹150 crore is a useful headline milestone, but a film's commercial assessment also depends on factors including costs and theatrical performance relative to expectations.

Welcome to the Jungle continued the momentum

Two months later, Akshay returned with Welcome to the Jungle.

Directed by Ahmed Khan, the third instalment of the Welcome franchise opened on June 26 after paid previews the previous evening.

The film registered a ₹15 crore India-net opening on its regular first day, according to box-office tracking cited by multiple publications. Including preview earnings, its domestic total had reached approximately ₹18.75 crore.

That put its initial performance ahead of Bhooth Bangla and Jolly LLB 3.

The film subsequently entered the ₹100 crore net club in India and crossed ₹150 crore worldwide.

Bollywood Hungama currently lists its lifetime India net collection at approximately ₹130.63 crore, with a worldwide gross of approximately ₹164.14 crore.

Those figures are below Bhooth Bangla, but they remain significant because Welcome to the Jungle extended rather than interrupted Akshay's improving theatrical run.

The recovery actually started before 2026

Looking only at Bhooth Bangla would make the turnaround appear more sudden than it was.

Akshay's 2025 releases had already started producing stronger numbers.

Housefull 5 finished at approximately ₹160.72 crore net in India, according to Bollywood Hungama, while Jolly LLB 3 reached approximately ₹113.59 crore.

The publication classified both films as Average, demonstrating again why collection totals and commercial verdicts should not be treated as interchangeable.

Sky Force, released earlier in 2025, also contributed to the period in which Akshay began moving away from the run of underperforming theatrical releases that had defined much of his immediate post-pandemic phase.

The pattern is therefore more significant than any single ₹150 crore achievement.

Why genre appears to matter

Another pattern emerges when the recent films are placed next to each other.

Housefull 5, Bhooth Bangla and Welcome to the Jungle all operate heavily within comedy or comedy-adjacent commercial entertainment - territory closely associated with some of Akshay's most popular films.

Jolly LLB 3 combines courtroom drama with comedy and social commentary.

That does not prove audiences will automatically turn up whenever Akshay makes a comedy. But his recent numbers suggest that familiar, accessible theatrical genres have provided a stronger platform for him than several of the films released during his earlier post-pandemic slump.
