What has the Enforcement Directorate actually established?

There is considerably stronger documentation concerning earlier alleged gifts.

In an official press release dated April 30, 2022, the Enforcement Directorate said its investigation had found that Chandrasekhar had given gifts worth ₹5.71 crore to Fernandez from alleged proceeds of crime. The agency further alleged that money was sent to members of her family and that ₹15 lakh had been delivered to a scriptwriter on her behalf as an advance for a web-series project.

The distinction in wording matters here as well. These are findings and allegations made by the investigating agency in a money-laundering case; they should not be expanded into claims beyond what the ED itself documented.

This also corrects a figure appearing in the original news lead. The official 2022 ED release does not say that Fernandez received “more than ₹10 crore” in gifts. It specifically states that the gifts were valued at ₹5.71 crore, while separately mentioning foreign-currency payments to members of her family.

Chandrasekhar has made extravagant gift claims before

The latest reported claims are not isolated.

In February 2026, Chandrasekhar claimed in another letter that he had arranged an Airbus H-series helicopter as a Valentine’s Day gift for Fernandez. Contemporary coverage noted that Fernandez had not publicly confirmed receiving it.

Similar letters over previous years have contained claims involving luxury yachts, private aircraft and other high-value presents. In August 2024, for instance, he claimed that a yacht named Lady Jacqueline was intended for Fernandez and also announced other birthday-related gestures. Those statements originated with Chandrasekhar rather than independent evidence demonstrating transfer of ownership.

That history is precisely why a new claim involving a film studio, stadium or football club requires documentary verification before it can responsibly be reported as a gift Fernandez actually received.

Why the present legal context matters

Chandrasekhar remains tied to proceedings arising from an alleged ₹200-crore extortion racket and a connected money-laundering investigation.

The ED’s 2022 statement alleged that he had operated an extortion scheme while in jail and that proceeds from criminal activity were used to fund gifts and other payments. The agency said it had provisionally attached ₹7.27 crore in assets belonging to Fernandez as part of its investigation.

The legal proceedings have continued well beyond that stage. In May 2026, a Delhi court ordered the framing of charges against multiple people, including Fernandez, in the connected PMLA proceedings, according to contemporaneous reporting. That development means references to the investigation should now be written with particular precision rather than presenting older descriptions of Fernandez merely as someone questioned in the case.
