Mahesh Bhatt has made a striking prediction about granddaughter Raha Kapoor, but it isn't quite the Bollywood career forecast that some headlines might suggest.

Speaking about the three-year-old daughter of Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor, the filmmaker said Raha possesses an energy distinct from both her famous parents and predicted that she would eventually “outdistance” them.

His comments came during a wider interview with The Times of India, published on August 8, in which Bhatt reflected on Alia's evolution as an actor and mother, his relationship with his daughters and the impact Raha has had on the family.

What stands out is whom Raha reminds him of.

His prediction appears to be a grandfather's affectionate assessment of the child's personality and presence rather than a statement about an eventual Bollywood career.

Bhatt's comparison becomes more interesting when he describes where he sees similarities within the family.

According to the original interview, he sees Raha as a “vibrant version of Pooja.” 

The filmmaker recalled attending Raha's Grandparents' Day at school with Neetu Kapoor while Soni Razdan was in Istanbul.

Bhatt remembered walking with Raha through soap bubbles while he and Neetu held one of her hands each. During that experience, he said, he was reminded of Pooja as a child.

It is a revealing comparison.

Alia and Ranbir are two of contemporary Hindi cinema's most prominent actors, meaning almost any public discussion surrounding their daughter inevitably connects her identity to theirs.

Mahesh instead appears to recognise something familiar from an earlier generation of his family.

The latest “outdistance” remark sounds dramatic when isolated as a headline, but in context it forms part of a pattern in how Bhatt has spoken about his granddaughter for some time.

He seems fascinated less by the possibility of her becoming famous and more by the personality he sees developing.

Read in the full interview, it sounds much more like something familiar:

And perhaps that is enough of a story without deciding her future for her.
