Madhubala Biopic With Sara Arjun Reportedly Eyes September Shoot, Sanjay Leela Bhansali Said to Back Film

A long-planned biopic on Hindi cinema legend Madhubala may finally be moving closer to production, with Sara Arjun reportedly lined up for the title role and a September 2026 shoot now being targeted.

The latest development, however, needs an important qualification. While the Madhubala film itself was formally announced in 2024 with Darlings filmmaker Jasmeet K Reen as director, the new September schedule, Sara Arjun’s casting and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s reported involvement as producer have not yet been announced through the project’s original official channels.

A report originating with Mid-Day and subsequently carried by multiple publications says production is expected to begin in September after work winds down on Bhansali’s Love & War. An unnamed industry source cited in that report said the production-design team is expected to begin converting a space at Royal Palms in Goregaon once the Love & War schedule finishes at the end of August.

For now, therefore, September should be treated as a reported production target rather than a formally confirmed start date.

What Has Actually Been Confirmed About the Madhubala Biopic?

The strongest confirmed foundation for the project dates back to March 15, 2024.

Sony Pictures Films India officially announced a film based on Madhubala’s life and named Jasmeet K Reen as director. At the time, the production partnership consisted of Sony Pictures International Productions and Brewing Thoughts Pvt Ltd, with Madhubala’s sister Madhur Brij Bhushan and Arvind Kumar Malviya associated through Madhubala Ventures.

Casting had not been revealed in that announcement.

That distinction is particularly relevant now because newer reports describe the project as being backed or produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

No corresponding public announcement from the original producers or Bhansali’s official channels was located during The Celebrity Hour’s review confirming how the production structure may have changed since 2024.

It is entirely possible for financing and producing arrangements to evolve during a film’s development, but until the makers clarify the current configuration, Bhansali’s association should remain attributed to the recent reporting rather than presented as an independently established production credit.

Is Sara Arjun Playing Madhubala?

Sara Arjun has been linked strongly with the role since April 2026.

Variety India reported on April 22 that Sara had been chosen to portray Madhubala and that Bhansali would produce the project, with Jasmeet continuing as director. That report also said filming was then expected to begin in July 2026 and described the film as intended for a direct-to-streaming release.

That July timeline is useful context for the newest update: production evidently did not begin on the schedule originally reported.

The fresh August reports have now moved the proposed start to September and claim that Sara has begun preparing for the role. An industry source quoted in the latest coverage said Jasmeet wants to capture Madhubala’s personality, mannerisms and the period in which she lived.

Neither Sara nor the original producing entities appear to have issued a fresh public casting announcement confirming her as Madhubala at the time of writing.

Accordingly, her casting is best described as widely reported rather than officially announced.

The Changing Production Timeline Is the Bigger Story

The September report is more significant when viewed against the film’s unusually long development history.

When Sony Pictures formally announced the project in March 2024, it described the film as an exploration of Madhubala’s life, career and the challenges she faced as a woman working in the film industry of her era. The announcement attached Jasmeet K Reen but deliberately kept the lead casting under wraps.

Two years later, the project appears to have gone through a new phase of development.

The April 2026 report introduced three major pieces of information that had not formed part of the original announcement: Sara Arjun as the proposed lead, Bhansali as producer and a planned streaming release. It also projected a July production start.

Now, in August, the schedule has apparently shifted to September.

Rather than suggesting that the film suddenly came into existence after Love & War, the available evidence therefore points to a project that has been in development for years and may now be undergoing another attempt to move into physical production.

Why Sara Arjun Would Make This a Major Career Step

If her casting is formally confirmed, Madhubala would give Sara one of the most demanding leading roles of her career.

She received wider mainstream visibility through Dhurandhar, but portraying Madhubala would require her to carry a biographical drama centred on an actress whose screen legacy extends across some of Hindi cinema’s defining films.

Madhubala’s filmography includes Mahal, Mr. & Mrs. 55, Howrah Bridge, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Barsaat Ki Raat and Mughal-e-Azam. She died on February 23, 1969, aged 36, after a career that established her among the most recognisable stars of Hindi cinema.

The difficulty for any actor playing her will therefore go beyond recreating famous photographs or costumes. A serious biopic would need to convey Madhubala as a working performer, major commercial star and woman navigating the Hindi film industry long before the modern celebrity ecosystem existed.

That makes the director particularly important.

Jasmeet K Reen’s continued association is one element of the project that has remained consistent from the official 2024 announcement through the latest round of reports. Her debut feature, Netflix’s Darlings, was built around complicated relationships and morally layered characters rather than conventional biographical spectacle.

Aneet Padda Rumours Were Previously Denied

The casting trail has also produced considerable speculation.

In March 2026, reports connected Saiyaara actor Aneet Padda to the Madhubala role. Her management agency, YRF Talent, publicly rejected those reports as “untrue.”

Sara’s name surfaced more prominently soon afterwards.

That sequence is another reason to distinguish industry reports from official casting announcements. The Madhubala project has attracted several proposed names over its development history, but not every reported possibility has materialised.

The Celebrity Hour Take

The most useful way to read the latest Madhubala update is not as a fresh confirmation but as evidence that a previously announced project may finally be approaching production.

There are currently three different levels of certainty around the film.

Sara Arjun playing Madhubala and Sanjay Leela Bhansali joining as producer have been reported by established industry coverage but have not yet received the same level of public confirmation from the makers. The changed timeline is worth watching. An April report had filming beginning in July; the latest information points to September instead. If sets are actually prepared after the completion of Love & War, that would provide much stronger evidence that the Madhubala film has moved beyond development and into active production.

Until then, describing Bhansali as “set to begin” the film risks overstating what has actually been established.
