Ranveer Singh has officially begun filming Pralay, director Jai Mehta’s large-scale post-apocalyptic action thriller, with principal photography getting underway in Mumbai on August 16, 2026.

The production has confirmed that the film is shooting at live locations in and around Mumbai after spending several months in technically intensive pre-production. Kalyani Priyadarshan is also part of the cast in a pivotal role, while Ranveer is involved not only as the lead actor but also as a producer through Maa Kasam Films.

However, the production's launch messaging reviewed for this report is broader, using phrases such as “end-of-the-world action thriller” and “survival spectacle.” For that reason, the safest description at this stage is a post-apocalyptic survival/action thriller, while the zombie element can be attributed to prior reporting rather than presented as newly disclosed plot information.

Hansal Mehta says the story is original

One of the most important verified details about Pralay came months before filming began.

In an April interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, producer Hansal Mehta rejected speculation that the film was an adaptation of José Saramago’s novel Blindness. He said Jai Mehta and writer Vishal Kapoor had developed an original story.

Hansal also explained that Jai had been developing the concept before Ranveer became involved. According to him, Ranveer saw Jai’s directing work, responded positively to the filmmaker and eventually backed his vision after hearing the idea.
