Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Khalifa is now in cinemas, and its official Central Board of Film Certification record provides a clearer picture of the film than the pre-release certification update alone.

The Malayalam action-crime thriller, directed by Vysakh, was certified UA 16+ by the CBFC’s Thiruvananthapuram regional office on August 13, 2026. The official database lists its certified length as 159.45 minutes, or approximately two hours and 39 minutes, and identifies Jinu Varghese Abraham/Jiinu Abraham Innovation as the applicant and producer.

The film subsequently opened in theatres on August 20, 2026, meaning the original pre-release story has already moved into a new phase: Khalifa is no longer merely awaiting release after certification but is beginning its theatrical run during the Onam period.

What does Khalifa’s UA 16+ certificate actually mean?

The UA 16+ classification should not be confused with an “A” or adults-only certificate.

According to the CBFC, a UA 16+ film remains eligible for unrestricted public exhibition, but parents or guardians are cautioned to decide whether children below 16 should watch it. The age marker was introduced as part of the expanded UA classification system and can reflect elements such as violence, mature themes or other material that the board believes merits parental consideration for younger viewers.

This is an important distinction because describing Khalifa simply as suitable “only for viewers aged 16 and above” would be inaccurate. The classification is advisory in relation to viewers below the specified age, rather than an adults-only restriction.

What the official CBFC record reveals about Khalifa

The CBFC database lists the film under the title Khalifa-The Ruler and names Prithviraj Sukumaran among the principal actors. Mohanlal also appears in the official cast listing, alongside Renji Panicker, Mohini, Mohan Sharma, Malavika Sharma and Nafash.

The same certification entry credits Vysakh as director, Jinu V. Abraham for the story, screenplay and dialogues, Jomon T. John as director of photography, Chaman Chakko as editor and Jakes Bejoy as music composer. Producers are listed as Jinu V. Abraham and Suraj Kumar.

Most importantly, the CBFC synopsis provides an official starting point for the story.

It identifies Prithviraj’s character as Aamir Ali, initially describing him as a young man from Koduvally living with his parents, Yunus Ali and Noorjahan. The film’s promotional material then expands that character into the gold-smuggling and crime world around which its action-thriller narrative is built.

Prithviraj had announced the certification himself

Ahead of release, Prithviraj Sukumaran shared the censor update on his social-media channels, confirming both the UA 16+ rating and the worldwide August 20 theatrical date.

His announcement was subsequently carried by IANS and other publications, giving the certification update a direct connection to the film’s lead actor rather than relying solely on unofficial pre-release listings.

The certification had therefore been firmly established before release; the larger question now is how the film performs after reaching cinemas.

Khalifa has already moved beyond its pre-release stage

Khalifa opened on August 20 and is currently listed as playing theatrically in Malayalam and additional dubbed versions. BookMyShow lists the film at roughly 2 hours 39 minutes, consistent with the CBFC-certified runtime.

Early box-office reporting indicates an India net opening of around ₹4.9 crore to ₹5 crore. Because theatrical collection figures can vary depending on methodology and source, these numbers should be presented as reported estimates rather than official producer-certified totals.

The Hollywood Reporter India has separately reported an estimated worldwide first-day gross of approximately ₹12 crore, again underlining the need to distinguish trade estimates from any eventual figures released by the production team.

For a certification-led story, however, the opening collection is useful mainly as an update: it shows that Khalifa has already transitioned from one of the season’s major upcoming Malayalam releases into an active theatrical title.

The Prithviraj-Vysakh combination returns

Khalifa also reunites Prithviraj with director Vysakh. Jinu V. Abraham, who has previously worked with Prithviraj as the director of Adam Joan and producer of Kaapa, wrote the new film.
