Neha Bhasin Slams Bhumi Pednekar Over NEET Protest Remarks: "Gooda Nahi Hai Toh Chup Rehna Best Hai Behen"

Singer Neha Bhasin has publicly taken issue with actor Bhumi Pednekar's recent comments on the language used by protesters during the CJI-led NEET-UG 2023 demonstrations, arguing that the actor's focus on decorum was misplaced when serious questions about police conduct remained unanswered.

What sparked the row

The controversy began after Bhumi posted an Instagram video expressing discomfort over clips showing protesters hurling abuses at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the video, she said the language being used by young protesters didn't reflect the country's culture, asking whether such words would ever be used against elders at home, and stressed that respect for the office of the Prime Minister mattered regardless of political disagreement. She followed up by saying that constructive dialogue, not abuse, was the only way for the country to move forward and that India's value system was its backbone.

The comments didn't sit well with a section of social media users, who felt Bhumi had skipped over a far more pressing issue: the alleged use of force by police against student protesters during the July 20 march to Parliament. Videos had surfaced online purportedly showing demonstrators being lathi-charged, tear-gassed, and manhandled, and many felt an actor speaking up about "civility" should have addressed that first.

Neha Bhasin's response

Neha Bhasin joined the pile-on with a sharply worded post. She said she would have respected the Prime Minister more if he had called out the police for allegedly touching women inappropriately during the protests, pointing out that he had himself referred to the protesters as kids, and questioned why there was no accountability for the police despite their duty to uphold the law.

She then turned her attention directly to Bhumi, remarking that the actor had been scripted both on Lock Upp and in her comments on the protests, and suggested it was sometimes best to stay quiet if one isn't genuinely brave.

The dig was a reference to Bhumi's recent stint on Lock Upp, where she appeared as Janta Ki Awaz alongside Huma Qureshi in the show's Judgment Day episode, hosted by Farah Khan and Riteish Deshmukh.

The bigger picture

The exchange comes amid ongoing nationwide protests over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. Organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), thousands of students gathered at Delhi's Jantar Mantar demanding education system reforms and the resignation of the Education Minister following a string of student suicides. While Dharmendra Pradhan has since stepped down, protesters have continued pushing for wider reforms, and tensions escalated further after the July 20 march to Parliament, when footage allegedly showing police using batons, tear gas, and physical force against demonstrators went viral triggering the very outrage Bhasin is now channeling toward Bhumi.
