Mirzapur: The Movie Day 1 Box Office Collection

Mirzapur: The Movie has made a strong start at the Indian box office, demonstrating that the crime franchise’s popularity on streaming can translate into meaningful theatrical demand.

According to live data published by box-office tracker Sacnilk at 9:03 pm IST on September 4, 2026, the film had earned an estimated ₹22.56 crore net in India from its opening day. Its corresponding India gross was estimated at ₹26.62 crore across 10,537 shows.

These are provisional figures being updated as collections arrive from theatres; the final Day 1 total has not yet been reported. The film’s producers, Excel Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios, had also not announced an official opening-day collection at the time this report was prepared.

The available data nevertheless points to a sizeable theatrical launch for a property that began as a Prime Video streaming series in 2018.

Hindi version drives the opening

The Hindi version accounted for almost all the film’s business during the early part of Friday. An Indian Express report based on Sacnilk’s 7 pm update placed the India net collection at ₹17.28 crore at that stage, including approximately ₹17.18 crore from Hindi screenings and ₹10 lakh from the Telugu version.

The estimate subsequently climbed past ₹22 crore as evening shows were added.

Sacnilk’s live occupancy data placed the Hindi version’s overall occupancy at approximately 36.28 percent before night-show figures were available. Performance varied considerably between markets: the National Capital Region was estimated at 48 percent occupancy, while Lucknow was among the stronger centres at 71 percent. Mumbai was tracking at a more modest 24.3 percent at that point.

All occupancy and collection numbers remain estimates rather than audited producer figures.

Advance bookings provided an early indication

The opening was supported by substantial advance-ticket demand. Different trackers published varying pre-release totals because they used different reporting times and methodologies, but the available figures consistently suggested a double-digit opening.

On September 3, Sacnilk reported ₹3.92 crore in advance gross without blocked seats, based on approximately 1.4 lakh tickets sold at the time of its update. Later reports placed the value higher as bookings continued through Thursday evening and Friday morning.

The subsequent live collection suggests that spot bookings and same-day sales added significantly to the pre-booked business, particularly during afternoon and evening shows.

The final opening figure will determine whether the film reaches the approximately ₹25 crore net projection published before release.

From Prime Video franchise to theatrical film

The larger significance of the opening lies in the franchise’s journey from digital streaming to cinemas.

Prime Video’s official announcement describes Mirzapur: The Movie as the first theatrical installment in the franchise. Its principal characters originated in the streaming series, which has released three seasons since 2018.

Pankaj Tripathi returns as Akhandanand “Kaleen” Tripathi, with Ali Fazal reprising the role of Guddu Pandit and Divyenndu returning as Munna Tripathi. The ensemble also includes Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Rasika Dugal, and Abhishek Banerjee, alongside additions such as Ravi Kishan and Jitendra Kumar.

The film is directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Mirzapur creator Puneet Krishna. It is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani are credited as co-producers.

Released in Hindi and Telugu on September 4, the film takes the franchise’s battle for control of Mirzapur into a standalone theatrical format.

Why the first weekend now matters

A strong opening establishes audience curiosity, but it does not by itself determine whether the film is a commercial success. Friday’s night shows, Saturday growth, and Sunday occupancy will provide a clearer measure of its first-weekend trajectory.

The film’s long runtime and adult certification could affect the number of shows available and the breadth of its audience. At the same time, familiarity with characters such as Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu, and Munna gives it a level of recognition that most new theatrical crime dramas must build from scratch.

The performance of the Telugu version will also be worth tracking. Its early contribution was limited, indicating that the opening was primarily powered by the franchise’s Hindi-market audience.

The Celebrity Hour Take

Mirzapur: The Movie is more than another franchise extension. Its opening is an early test of whether a streaming-native Indian property can persuade viewers many of whom first watched it at home to purchase cinema tickets for a new chapter.

The provisional Day 1 performance suggests that the franchise has cleared that first hurdle. The more important test begins after the initial curiosity subsides. If collections remain steady through the weekend and weekdays, the film could strengthen the case for other successful Indian streaming properties to explore theatrical expansions.

For now, “strong opening” is supported by the available data. Broader descriptions such as “blockbuster” or “box-office phenomenon” should wait until verified final figures and weekend trends are available.

Sources & Verification

This report was prepared using Amazon’s official information about the film, Excel Entertainment’s franchise announcement, and live box-office estimates from Sacnilk. The Celebrity Hour compared the tracker’s figures with independently published coverage of the film’s opening. Day 1 collections remain provisional and should be updated when the producers or box-office trackers publish final totals.
