Malamaal Weekly 2 Expands Its Ensemble, but Riteish Deshmukh’s Status Still Needs Caution

Two decades after Malamaal Weekly turned a lottery ticket and a village full of opportunists into a memorable Hindi comedy, a second film carrying the title is now moving forward with a substantially expanded ensemble.

The strongest confirmed element so far is Paresh Rawal’s involvement. In March 2026, the actor personally confirmed that he was doing Malamaal Weekly 2, after early reports said a sequel was being developed.

Since then, the project has gathered several more names through a combination of direct confirmation and trade reporting. Paresh Rawal and Elvish Yadav have the clearest confirmations

Paresh Rawal told Hindustan Times in March that the sequel was real and that he was part of it, making his participation one of the earliest first-person confirmations attached to the project.

Elvish Yadav later went a step further and publicly discussed joining Malamaal Weekly 2. His social-media post referred to working alongside actors including Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Riteish Deshmukh, Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shirodkar, providing direct evidence of his own involvement and some useful context around the planned ensemble.

That makes Elvish’s casting considerably firmer than names that have appeared only through anonymous-source reporting.

Riteish Deshmukh’s casting should not be overstated yet

Riteish Deshmukh has been consistently linked to the sequel from the beginning.

A February 2026 report by Bollywood Hungama said the makers had approached Riteish, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav. At that stage, however, Paresh had reportedly given a verbal nod while Riteish and Rajpal were still in talks.

By August, the same publication reported that Riteish, Elvish, Paresh and Rajpal had been “locked” as leads — but the report itself also said Riteish was still reading the script and had not signed on the dotted line at that point.

That distinction matters.

It would therefore be safer to describe Riteish as strongly linked to and expected to headline the film, rather than presenting his participation as contractually confirmed unless a fresh statement from the actor or producers settles the point.

Amit Joshi is reported to be directing, not Priyadarshan

Priyadarshan directed the original Malamaal Weekly in 2006, but the sequel is being developed with Amit Joshi at the helm, according to trade reporting dating back to April 2026. Joshi previously co-directed and co-wrote Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.

Subsequent August reports continued to identify Amit Joshi as the sequel’s director.

So while Malamaal Weekly 2 draws its identity from Priyadarshan’s comedy, it should not currently be described as a new Priyadarshan-directed film.
