Mahakali First Glimpse Puts Akshaye Khanna’s Shukracharya at the Centre of a War Between Devas and Asuras

Akshaye Khanna has stepped into an entirely different screen world with Mahakali, appearing as Asuraguru Shukracharya in the newly released first glimpse of the upcoming mythological spectacle.

Titled “Shukracharya’s War Cry,” the nearly three-minute promotional video was released on August 24 and provides the clearest look yet at the conflict being developed for the next chapter of the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU). The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on January 8, 2027.

The project is created by Prasanth Varma, directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru, presented by RK Duggal and produced by Riwaz Ramesh Duggal under RKD Studios.

But Akshaye Khanna's physical transformation is only the most immediately visible element of the glimpse. More significantly, the footage establishes Shukracharya as a central force driving the film's ideological and mythological conflict.

What ‘Shukracharya’s War Cry’ Reveals

The glimpse draws on the mythology surrounding the conflict between the Devas and Asuras, including references to Samudra Manthan and the struggle over Amrit.

Rather than immediately presenting the Asuras merely as conventional antagonists, the footage frames Shukracharya as challenging what he considers injustices committed against them. The narrative then escalates towards a confrontation involving the Devas, Asuras and humanity.

Akshaye appears with long white hair, an extensive beard and an imposing physical presentation, continuing the dramatic character transformations that have become a notable part of his recent screen work.

The actor's casting as Shukracharya had actually been revealed much earlier. RKD Studios officially introduced his character in September 2025, describing him as the eternal Asuraguru.

The new footage therefore does something more important than simply revealing his appearance: it finally shows how the character functions within the film's larger conflict.

A Mystery Around Mahakali

The promotional footage doesn't disclose the complete plot, and several important narrative elements remain deliberately unexplained.

One of them concerns a newborn child. The glimpse opens with imagery involving a baby inside a temple, while the child appears again later in connection with Goddess Mahakali. The relationship between the child, the goddess and the larger Deva-Asura conflict has not yet been officially explained.

That mystery gives the footage a narrative thread beyond its large-scale visual effects and battle imagery.

Sriya Reddy also makes a striking appearance in the glimpse, although viewers should be cautious about drawing definitive conclusions about character identities and the complete story solely from promotional footage.

Bhoomi Shetty, Rohit Saraf and a Large Ensemble Join Mahakali

Mahakali has assembled a substantial ensemble around Akshaye Khanna.

The officially publicised cast includes Bhoomi Shetty, Sriya Reddy, Rohit Saraf, Khushboo Sundar, Rakesh Bedi, Samuthirakani, Jitin Gulati, Rajat Kapoor, Murali Sharma, Nassar and Babloo Prithveeraj, among others.

Behind the camera, Prasanth Varma is credited as creator, with Puja Aparna Kolluru directing. Smaran Sai is handling the music and Suresh Ragatu the cinematography, while Sri Nagendra Tangala is credited as production designer.

The production had already completed 125 days of filming by July 2026, when promotional information around the project said it had entered its final phase of shooting. Akshaye Khanna and Rohit Saraf had completed their portions by that stage.

Mahakali Expands the World Established by Hanu-Man

Mahakali carries additional significance because it isn't being positioned as an isolated mythological film.

It belongs to the cinematic universe created by Prasanth Varma following Hanu-Man, with the makers using Mahakali to broaden that universe into another part of Indian mythological storytelling. Promotional material surrounding the latest glimpse explicitly connects the new film with the universe established through Hanu-Man.

That makes the film's world-building particularly important.

Instead of using mythology merely as visual decoration, the first glimpse suggests that the conflict between competing interpretations of justice, power and Dharma could provide the narrative foundation for the spectacle.

Whether the finished film develops those ideas with comparable depth cannot be determined from a promotional video alone.

Akshaye Khanna Continues His Run of Transformative Roles

Mahakali also arrives during a distinctive phase of Akshaye Khanna's career.

His first Shukracharya poster was unveiled during the 2025 Durga Puja period, months before audiences were given this extended look at his performance.

The transformation inevitably recalls his recent willingness to dramatically alter his appearance for characters. His portrayal of Aurangzeb in Chhaava, for example, involved another extensive period transformation, while his appearance as Rehman Dakait in Dhurandhar was markedly different again.

Mahakali, however, puts him in an altogether different storytelling space: a large-scale mythological cinematic universe.

The Celebrity Hour Take

The most interesting aspect of Shukracharya's War Cry isn't Akshaye Khanna's prosthetics or even the scale of its visual effects. It is the decision to introduce the film's central conflict substantially through Shukracharya's perspective.

That gives Mahakali an opportunity to build its confrontation around competing motivations rather than relying exclusively on a straightforward hero-versus-villain structure.

It also demonstrates how Prasanth Varma's cinematic universe may evolve after Hanu-Man. Instead of simply repeating the superhero template with another deity-inspired protagonist, Mahakali appears to be expanding the mythology, characters and ideological conflicts that can exist inside the same broader universe.

The glimpse cannot tell us whether the finished film will successfully balance mythology, character development and spectacle. What it does establish is ambition: Mahakali is being positioned as a major expansion of the PVCU rather than merely another standalone mythological action film.

The next significant reveal should make the roles of Bhoomi Shetty, Sriya Reddy and Rohit Saraf and the mystery surrounding the child shown in the glimpse considerably clearer.

Mahakali is scheduled to release worldwide on January 8, 2027.
