Kangana Ranaut Hits Back at Baba Ramdev Over ‘Generation Gutter’ Criticism: ‘Don’t Give Me Character Lessons’

Kangana Ranaut has sharply responded to Baba Ramdev after the yoga guru criticized her controversial remarks about young protesters, turning the weeks-old “Generation Gutter” debate into a direct and highly personal public exchange.

The actor and BJP MP responded through Instagram Stories after Ramdev questioned her comments about Gen Z and also made remarks about her past and character.

Kangana objected particularly strongly to that personal line of criticism.

“Baba ji don't daydream about my jawani or bedroom,” she wrote, before arguing that rumors and gossip about her personal life did not give Ramdev the authority to judge her character.

She also told him not to give her “character lessons” and invoked the Supreme Court proceedings involving Ramdev and Patanjali while defending her own record.

The exchange marks a significant escalation from a debate over Kangana's original comments about protesters into a personal confrontation between two public figures.

What did Baba Ramdev say about Kangana?

Ramdev's criticism came in response to Kangana's earlier description of sections of Gen Z as a “gutter generation.”

Speaking about the controversy, Ramdev strongly objected to describing the country's youth in such sweeping terms.

He questioned Kangana's qualifications to make such remarks and criticized what he considered the mentality reflected in the statement. He also referred to her own younger years while questioning whether someone should judge an entire generation on the basis of the conduct of some individuals.

Ramdev further suggested that the BJP should take note of such comments from one of its MPs.

His intervention was therefore both political and personal: he challenged Kangana's assessment of young people while also questioning whether her own background gave her the moral standing to judge them.

It was the latter part that prompted Kangana's particularly combative response.

Kangana invokes Supreme Court proceedings involving Ramdev

Kangana did not restrict her response to defending her original Gen Z remarks.

She turned the criticism back on Ramdev by referring to the Supreme Court proceedings connected with misleading advertisements involving Patanjali Ayurved.

In 2024, the Supreme Court dealt extensively with contempt proceedings arising from Patanjali advertisements that made claims about medicinal products despite an earlier undertaking given to the court.

Ramdev and Patanjali Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna appeared before the Supreme Court and tendered apologies during those proceedings.

The court subsequently closed the contempt proceedings in August 2024 after accepting their undertakings and cautioning them against violating court orders.

Kangana's reference to that episode was intended as a rebuttal to Ramdev questioning her character.

However, her comments remain part of a personal political exchange. The existence of the Supreme Court proceedings can be independently established; broader insults or conclusions either side draws from them remain their respective opinions.

Where did the ‘Generation Gutter’ controversy begin?

The dispute traces back to Kangana's response to young protesters associated with demonstrations at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

The BJP MP criticized behavior shown in videos circulating from the demonstrations and used variations of “gutter generation” to describe sections of the young protesters.

The language quickly became controversial because it appeared to characterize Gen Z more broadly.

Kangana subsequently attempted to clarify her position.

In a later Instagram video, she focused her criticism on conduct she considered vulgar or objectionable and questioned whether such behavior should be defended merely because the participants were young.

That clarification did not end the controversy.

Her original language continued to draw criticism, and Ramdev's intervention has now brought the debate back into the spotlight.

Ramdev and Kangana are arguing two different points

Beneath the personal attacks, the disagreement contains two separate questions.

Ramdev's central objection is to condemning a generation on the basis of the behavior of some young people. He has argued that India's youth should not be broadly characterized in derogatory terms.

Kangana's defense is narrower. She has argued that her criticism was directed at behavior she considered vulgar and unacceptable among particular protesters rather than every young Indian.

The disagreement over those positions has now been overshadowed by their comments about each other's character.

Kangana's response indicates that she considered Ramdev's reference to her younger years an intrusion into her personal life rather than legitimate criticism of her political statement.

The confrontation is unusual within broadly aligned political circles

There is another dimension to the exchange.

Kangana is not simply an actor commenting on a political controversy. She is a sitting BJP MP and has repeatedly expressed strong support for the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ramdev, meanwhile, has historically spoken favorably about several BJP-led initiatives and has been associated publicly with issues broadly aligned with sections of India's Hindu nationalist movement.

That makes this less predictable than a conventional clash between figures on opposite sides of India's political divide.

Ramdev has openly criticized the language used by a BJP parliamentarian, while Kangana has responded by invoking one of the most prominent legal controversies involving Ramdev's business interests.

Neither political proximity nor broadly overlapping views on some issues has prevented the disagreement from becoming intensely personal.
