Inside Samuk: Akshay Kumar Begins Sci-Fi Survival Thriller With Practical Alien Effects and Global Action Team

Akshay Kumar has officially started filming Samuk, confirming both the title of his new sci-fi survival-action thriller and the name of his character, Vivaan Ahuja, in a first-look video shared on Monday, August 24.

“New genre. New character. New challenge,” Akshay wrote while announcing the start of production, before introducing himself as Vivaan Ahuja and adding that Samuk had begun filming that day. The announcement moves the project beyond the trade-report stage: filming is now first-party confirmed by the actor, while producer Sunshine Pictures also lists Samuk on its official upcoming slate for 2027.

Directed by Kanishk Varma and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, with Aashin A Shah as co-producer, Samuk is being developed as a survival-action film combining science-fiction, creature horror and military-style action. Production has begun in London, according to the current production announcement and same-day reporting.

The project is particularly notable for an Akshay Kumar film because its creature is being designed with an emphasis on practical effects and animatronics, supported by technicians with experience on major Hollywood creature and action franchises.

Akshay Kumar Introduces Vivaan Ahuja

Akshay used the start-of-shoot announcement to reveal his character’s name without giving away the story.

The accompanying video shows him in a formal white shirt, black trousers and tie, presenting a comparatively restrained look rather than immediately revealing the creature or action spectacle at the centre of the film. His caption identifies the character simply as Vivaan Ahuja.

What Is Samuk Actually About?

Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah and director Kanishk Varma have previously described Samuk as an attempt to build an Indian alien survival thriller rather than a conventional superhero or fantasy film.

Varma has said the concept grew out of his interest in elite-security environments and survival films such as Alien and Predator. Shah, meanwhile, said the team wanted to make an alien thriller capable of standing alongside the international genre films audiences can now easily access through streaming platforms.

The film’s creative world is being built around three broad elements: military realism, survival horror and alien mythology. The exact balance between those elements has not yet been revealed.

This is also why describing Samuk simply as an “alien action movie” does not tell the full story. The filmmakers are positioning fear, survival and a physically present creature as central parts of its identity.

The Alien Will Not Be Entirely CGI

One of the most distinctive production decisions is the involvement of creature-effects specialist Alec Gillis.

Gillis has worked extensively in Hollywood creature filmmaking and is associated with effects work across the Alien and Predator franchises. For Samuk, he has been brought in to develop the central alien creature.

Vipul Shah has said the filmmakers deliberately want an “old-school” approach, shooting as much of the creature material practically on set as possible rather than constructing everything later through digital visual effects.

That does not mean Samuk will contain no CGI or VFX.

Rather, the stated strategy is to give the actors and camera a physical creature to interact with wherever practical, before using digital effects to enhance the result. Shah has said the intention is to keep VFX use comparatively limited for the creature work instead of making it entirely computer-generated.

For an Indian theatrical film operating in this genre, that production choice could become more significant than the alien premise itself.

Mission: Impossible and Bond Experience Joins the Action Team

The film has also brought Luke Tumber into its action department.

Tumber is a British action professional and former Royal Marine whose credits include major international productions. Current Samuk material connects him with films including Mission: Impossible, Venom and the James Bond title No Time to Die.

His involvement fits the military-survival angle Varma has discussed.

Instead of treating the action only as star-driven set pieces, Samuk appears to be building its action grammar around tactical movement, survival and encounters with a non-human threat.

The finished film will determine how much of that ambition translates to the screen, but the technical recruitment is already unusually specific for a Hindi creature feature.

Samuk did not move from concept to production overnight.

Most of Samuk Is Expected to Be Shot in the UK

Current production reporting says the shoot is concentrated heavily in the United Kingdom.

Approximately 90% of filming has been planned in the UK, with a smaller portion expected to be completed in Mumbai. The production has also been described as being designed around a largely continuous shooting schedule.

Because Sunshine Pictures has not yet published a detailed public production schedule specifying every location, those percentages should remain attributed to current production reporting rather than treated as an immutable official shooting plan.

Is Samuk Releasing in 2027?

A 2027 release window now has first-party support.

Sunshine Pictures’ official website lists Samuk among its upcoming films and identifies it as a 2027 movie.

What has not been announced is a specific theatrical date.

Reports have described the film as a large-scale pan-India theatrical release, but no confirmed day or month is currently listed on the producer’s official page.

Any exact date circulating before a new announcement should therefore be treated as provisional.

The Full Cast Is Still Under Wraps

Akshay Kumar is the only star being prominently positioned in the production-launch material.

The filmmakers have not yet formally revealed a complete ensemble cast or identified the other principal characters. That is worth maintaining as an editorial boundary.

Names circulating through casting rumours should not be added to a definitive Samuk cast list unless Sunshine Pictures, Akshay, the actors concerned or another first-party production source confirms them.

Alien cinema is not completely absent from India, but Samuk is unusual in the particular combination its makers are attempting.

The important promise is not merely “Akshay Kumar fights an alien.”

Kanishk Varma and Vipul Shah are talking about survival horror, military realism, practical creature effects and a physically constructed alien, while hiring technicians experienced in international creature and action filmmaking. That gives the project a clear creative test: can a mainstream Hindi star vehicle retain the tension and tactile quality that makes creature-survival cinema work?

Akshay’s casting could help solve one side of that equation. His action background makes him an obvious fit for physically demanding material, but Samuk will depend just as heavily on atmosphere, threat and creature credibility as it does on action choreography.

The use of Alec Gillis may consequently prove more important than simply adding an international name to the credits. If the filmmakers genuinely commit to shooting substantial creature interaction practically, Samuk could look and feel noticeably different from effects-heavy Indian science-fiction films built primarily in post-production.
