Hrithik Roshan’s Hrudayantar Cameo Revisited: How the Actor Backed Vikram Phadnis’ Directorial Debut

Nearly a decade after Hrudayantar marked Vikram Phadnis’ transition from fashion designer to filmmaker, Hrithik Roshan’s involvement in the Marathi family drama is back in focus.

Phadnis has recalled the support he received from Roshan while making his 2017 directorial debut, describing the actor’s backing as “unconditional” despite the two not being close friends. The comment comes from a recent interview reported as an exclusive and has not been independently verified by The Celebrity Hour through a video, transcript or first-party post.

What can be independently established, however, is that Roshan’s association with Hrudayantar went considerably beyond being a name attached to the film’s publicity. He made a special appearance in the movie and was also involved in its promotional campaign.

Released on July 7, 2017, Hrudayantar was written and directed by Vikram Phadnis and starred Mukta Barve and Subodh Bhave in the lead roles. The official trailer released by T-Series credited Phadnis as director and confirmed the July 7 theatrical release.

Roshan appeared in the film as himself, a casting detail also reflected in the film's credits.

His involvement was known well before the release. In May 2017, it was announced that Roshan would launch the film’s trailer. Phadnis said at the time that Roshan had supported the project “in so many ways” and that having him launch the trailer was special for the team.

That contemporary statement is particularly relevant to Phadnis’ latest recollection: the filmmaker was publicly acknowledging Roshan’s wider support for Hrudayantar even while the film was being promoted in 2017.

The cameo had a purpose in the story

Roshan’s appearance was not presented merely as a blink-and-miss celebrity insert.

Speaking ahead of the film’s release in 2017, Phadnis explained that Roshan’s character affected the life of a character and contributed to the film’s climax. The filmmaker also expressed gratitude for the actor’s support.

That makes the cameo more interesting in retrospect. For a first-time director moving from fashion into filmmaking — and doing so with a Marathi-language project rather than a mainstream Hindi launch vehicle — securing one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars gave Hrudayantar additional visibility without requiring the film to be built around him.

Roshan himself publicly acknowledged his association with the project at the time. NDTV reported in April 2017 that the actor had posted about being happy to be part of Phadnis’ film.

Hrudayantar was Vikram Phadnis’ filmmaking debut

The project represented a significant career shift for Phadnis, who had already established himself in fashion before moving behind the camera.

At its centre, Hrudayantar followed Shekhar and Samaira, played by Subodh Bhave and Mukta Barve, a married couple dealing with strain in their relationship while their family is confronted with a serious crisis.

The film therefore operated primarily as a family drama rather than a celebrity-led vehicle. Roshan’s appearance remained a supporting element within a story anchored by its Marathi cast.

Phadnis subsequently directed another Marathi film, Smile Please. Roshan again publicly supported the filmmaker: he attended the film’s launch and gave its first clap. At the event, Roshan also referred to having played a small role in Hrudayantar and offered his wishes to Phadnis and the new film’s team.

The later appearance provides additional documented context to the professional goodwill between the actor and filmmaker after Hrudayantar.

What makes this story notable is less the cameo itself than the consistency of the documented support around it.

A celebrity guest appearance can easily function as a promotional device, particularly when a major Hindi-film star appears in a regional production. In Hrudayantar’s case, however, the public record shows several points of involvement: Roshan acted in the film, participated in its trailer launch and later turned up to support Phadnis’ next Marathi directorial venture.

Phadnis’ latest description of that support adds a personal perspective, but the broader claim that Roshan backed his filmmaking journey does not depend solely on a new retrospective interview. Much of that relationship was already visible in public when Hrudayantar was being made and promoted.
