Tamannaah Bhatia’s Black-Cat Moment on ‘Ragini 3’ Set Is Eerie — but the Real Story Is the Franchise’s Big-Screen Reinvention

Tamannaah Bhatia did not need a horror prop to create one of the more atmospheric behind-the-scenes moments from Ragini 3.

While working a night schedule for the Balaji Motion Pictures film, the actor shared a brief Instagram Story showing a black cat walking through the set. Her caption was minimal: “Nightshift. Ragini 3.” The clip was subsequently documented by entertainment publications on August 7.

It was an amusingly appropriate coincidence for a horror production, but there is no evidence that Tamannaah treated the incident as supernatural, unlucky or paranormal.

The more substantial story sits beyond the black cat. Ragini 3 is currently in production as Balaji attempts to bring one of its established horror properties back to cinemas, this time positioning it as a “date-night horror” entertainer led by Tamannaah and Junaid Khan.

What Tamannaah actually shared from the night shoot

The short clip showed the cat passing through a dimly lit indoor environment during filming.

Contemporary coverage described the location as resembling a café set, although neither Tamannaah nor Balaji disclosed what scene was being filmed. No dialogue, character information or story point was revealed.

That distinction is useful because the clip should not be treated as a plot clue.

There is currently no reliable evidence that a black cat has any narrative significance in Ragini 3. It simply appeared during a real night shoot and happened to create an appropriately horror-themed visual.

The safest description is therefore also the simplest: a black cat wandered into view while Tamannaah was filming a horror movie at night.

‘Ragini 3’ is firmly in production

Unlike some projects that circulate for months through casting rumours, Ragini 3 has progressed into active production.

Balaji Motion Pictures publicly launched the project in February 2026 with Tamannaah Bhatia and Junaid Khan attached, while Shashanka Ghosh was announced as director. The film was described as a “date night horror” project designed to combine thrills, humour and entertainment.

Production began in London in July.

Tamannaah marked the start of her shoot through her own Instagram Story, sharing an image of the film’s clapboard. Balaji’s subsequent promotional post announced the shoot with the line: “Every date night STARTS with a smile… Swipe to meet #Ragini!” 

Current production information places the film on course for a 2027 theatrical release, although an exact date has not been formally announced.

It is officially being marketed as ‘Ragini 3’

One naming issue deserves clarification.

The project is frequently called Ragini MMS 3 in casual discussion and even in some media coverage because it follows Ragini MMS and Ragini MMS 2.

However, Balaji’s current promotional campaign is using the title Ragini 3.

That is the title The Celebrity Hour should prioritise unless the production company later changes or expands it officially. Balaji’s July shoot announcement itself used the hashtag #Ragini3, reinforcing the current branding.

This also helps distinguish official promotional material from several fan-made “Ragini MMS 3 trailers” circulating online. At least one widely indexed YouTube upload describes itself as a concept/fan-made trailer rather than an authentic Balaji release.

Junaid Khan and RJ Mahvash are part of the new chapter

Junaid Khan was announced opposite Tamannaah when the project was unveiled earlier this year.

The cast expanded again when RJ Mahvash publicly announced that she had joined Ragini 3.

Sharing photographs from the production, Mahvash thanked Ektaa Kapoor, Balaji Motion Pictures, casting director Shruti Mahajan and director Shashanka Ghosh for the opportunity. Cinema Express independently documented her announcement on August 1.

Other names have circulated in trade coverage, including Nargis Fakhri and Aayush Sharma. However, because the publicly accessible official Balaji announcement has not yet set out a complete ensemble cast, those names should be attributed to reporting rather than automatically described as formally announced.

Why this is a genuine franchise revival

The original Ragini MMS arrived in 2011 and became one of Balaji’s notable low-budget horror successes.

Balaji Telefilms’ own corporate reporting later described the first film as the “biggest sleeper hit of 2011.” The company subsequently positioned Ragini MMS 2, starring Sunny Leone, as a theatrical continuation combining horror, music and sensuality.

Balaji’s current catalogue still identifies Ragini MMS 2 as the sequel to that sleeper hit and records its March 21, 2014 theatrical release.

The property later expanded into digital storytelling, but Ragini 3 is now being developed again for cinemas.

That makes the Tamannaah-led film more than another numbered sequel. It represents an attempt to update a horror property created in a very different phase of Hindi genre filmmaking.

Shashanka Ghosh brings a different tonal background

Shashanka Ghosh’s involvement also suggests the new movie may not simply copy the mood of its predecessors.

His directing credits include Khoobsurat, Veere Di Wedding and the psychological thriller Freddy. Balaji has previously worked with him on both Veere Di Wedding and Freddy.

The makers’ repeated use of the phrase “date-night horror” similarly points towards a mixture of scares and relationship-driven entertainment instead of treating the project purely as a grim supernatural film.

Exactly how that balance works remains unknown because Balaji has not yet released an official synopsis.

The black cat should not become a fake paranormal story

This is the most important editorial restraint around the original news lead.

There is no evidence of a “haunted set.”

There is no verified claim from Tamannaah that the animal was an omen.

There is no account of unexplained incidents occurring after it appeared.

And there is no evidence that the production incorporated the encounter into the movie.

The appeal of the moment is precisely that no embellishment is necessary.

Ragini 3 still has large information gaps around its plot and characters. A brief night-shoot glimpse creates atmosphere without revealing any of the film’s actual scares.

The more meaningful story, however, is Balaji’s attempt to modernise a franchise that began 15 years ago. The original Ragini MMS was built around found-footage-style intimacy and provocative horror. The 2026 production is being marketed very differently as theatrical “date-night horror,” with Tamannaah leading a new ensemble and Shashanka Ghosh behind the camera.

The black cat is a coincidence. The franchise repositioning is the development worth watching.
