Fresh industry reporting says Mukerji is in discussions with Padukone for Brahmāstra Part Two: Dev, with the character Amrita expected to become significantly more important as the franchise explores the history of Shiva’s parents. The same report says Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are preparing to return, with shooting currently being targeted for April 2027.

There is an important caveat, however: as of August 21, neither Ayan Mukerji, Dharma Productions nor Padukone has publicly announced that she has signed the sequel. Dharma’s current official film listings also do not contain a new casting announcement for Brahmāstra Part Two.

So the accurate position is that Deepika is reportedly in talks not officially confirmed.

Why Deepika Padukone makes sense for Brahmāstra Part Two

Padukone would not technically be a new entrant to the Astraverse.

She appeared briefly and without prominent billing in Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva as Amrita, Shiva’s mother. Current streaming cast information also identifies her as Amrita.

That appearance was deliberately limited because the first film concentrated on Shiva, played by Ranbir Kapoor, discovering his connection with the world of Astras.

The sequel, however, was established around Dev, the mysterious figure connected to Shiva’s origins, while Amrita is central to that backstory. That makes Padukone’s potential return narratively more significant than a conventional franchise cameo.

If the reported casting works out, Part Two could expand a character audiences only glimpsed in the opening chapter into one of the Astraverse’s principal figures.

What the latest report says

Pinkvilla reported on August 19 that work on Brahmāstra 2 has moved forward and that Ranbir Kapoor is expected to begin shooting in April 2027.

According to the report, Mukerji has started discussions with Padukone about playing Amrita, although scheduling and other logistical details still need to be resolved before a formal agreement can be considered final.

The report further claims that Ranbir would play both Shiva and Dev in the sequel, while Alia Bhatt would return as Isha. Secondary coverage of the same development has repeated those details.

These details remain reported production information, not first-party casting announcements.

That distinction is especially important because casting around Dev and Amrita has generated speculation almost continuously since Part One released in 2022.

Ranbir Kapoor reportedly playing both Shiva and Dev would change the sequel

One of the more interesting elements in the new report is the claim that Ranbir could take on a dual role.

The first film clearly established him as Shiva, the fire-powered protagonist at the centre of the Astraverse. Disney’s official description of Part One presents Shiva as the young man whose mysterious connection with the Brahmāstra gradually reveals his larger destiny.

Dev, meanwhile, was deliberately kept largely mysterious.

If Mukerji ultimately casts Ranbir as both father and son, the sequel would move away from years of speculation about a second major male star playing Dev and instead build its central conflict around Kapoor portraying two generations of the same family.

But this is another point that has not yet been formally announced by Mukerji.

Alia Bhatt remains part of the reported plan

Alia Bhatt played Isha opposite Shiva in the first chapter, and the newest production reports say she will return.

A separate report published on August 21 claims her appearance may be more limited than in the first film, while still giving her a substantial place in the sequel alongside the Amrita storyline.

Again, there is no fresh first-party announcement specifying the size of Bhatt’s role.

The safer conclusion is therefore that she is widely reported to be part of the sequel, while detailed claims about shooting days or whether she and Padukone would function as “parallel leads” should remain attributed until the filmmakers disclose the structure themselves.

Ayan Mukerji always planned Brahmāstra as a trilogy

Unlike many sequels developed only after a first film succeeds, Brahmāstra was conceived as a multi-film universe from the beginning.

Disney described Brahmāstra as a planned three-part franchise and the opening chapter of the Astraverse when the first film arrived internationally.

In April 2023, Mukerji publicly announced that work was continuing on both Part Two and Part Three. At that time, he said he wanted to develop the two films together because the next chapters would be “bigger and more ambitious” than the first.

He initially announced release targets of 2026 and 2027.

Those dates have clearly not held. It is now August 2026 and Part Two has not begun filming, illustrating just how significantly the franchise’s original timetable has shifted.

That makes the reported April 2027 shoot particularly meaningful: if accurate, it would mark the most concrete forward movement on the sequel in years.

Why Deepika’s casting matters beyond star power

Padukone’s possible return is more interesting because of the character than because it would simply add another major star.

Amrita represents one half of the unanswered story at the centre of Shiva’s origins.

Part One introduced Shiva as someone gradually learning the truth about his powers. The sequel’s title Dev points toward exploring the previous generation and the events that ultimately shaped him.

A properly developed Amrita would therefore give Padukone a role tied directly to the mythology of the Astraverse rather than simply placing her in the same film as Ranbir and Alia.

That distinction gets lost when the story is framed only as a reunion of three Bollywood stars.

What is confirmed and what remains reported

At this stage, the information can be separated fairly clearly.

Confirmed: Ayan Mukerji publicly intends Brahmāstra to continue beyond Part One. The second chapter is titled around Dev, and Deepika Padukone appeared as Amrita in the first movie. The original movie was conceived as the beginning of a trilogy.

Reliably reported, but not officially announced: Ranbir Kapoor is expected to begin filming the sequel in April 2027; he may play both Shiva and Dev; Alia Bhatt is expected back as Isha; and Mukerji is in talks with Padukone for Amrita.

Not confirmed: that Padukone has signed the film, that contracts have been completed, or that the final cast and shooting schedule have been locked publicly.

That makes headlines declaring “Deepika Padukone joins Brahmāstra 2” premature at this point.

The more interesting development is not simply the possibility of seeing Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone together.

It is that Brahmāstra Part Two may finally be taking shape around the mythology that Part One deliberately left unresolved.

Deepika’s Amrita was barely visible in the first chapter but potentially occupies a crucial position in the sequel. If Ranbir is indeed playing both Shiva and Dev, the film could become far more focused on the complicated relationship between those characters and Amrita than the first movie’s Shiva-Isha love story.

There is also a wider franchise question.

Ayan announced ambitious sequel plans in April 2023, but more than three years later the second instalment has yet to start production. A reported April 2027 shoot therefore matters more than another round of casting speculation.

The next genuinely significant update will be a direct announcement from Mukerji or the production team confirming who is playing Dev and Amrita — and when cameras actually begin rolling.
