KBC 18 Opens With Aamir Khan, Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta as ‘Batwara 1947’ Takes Over Amitabh Bachchan’s Hot Seat

Updated: Aug 21

Kaun Banega Crorepati returned for its 18th season on August 10, 2026, with Amitabh Bachchan welcoming Aamir Khan, Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta to the opening episode.
The appearance was tied directly to the promotion of Batwara 1947, the Partition-era drama starring Sunny and Preity and produced by Aamir Khan Productions. Sony Entertainment Television had teased the trio’s appearance before the premiere through a promo built around the new season’s “Sochna Padega” theme.
But the episode did more than place three major Hindi-film personalities together on the hot seat. It also used the guests to demonstrate how KBC’s new season intends to push contestants beyond straightforward recall.
Aamir Khan Tests KBC’s ‘Sochna Padega’ Idea
In Sony’s pre-premiere promo, Aamir questioned Amitabh Bachchan about what exactly contestants would have to “think” about under the new theme.
Bachchan’s response made the format’s intent clear: the questions were not going to be quite as easy as they might first appear. Aamir then acknowledged the point, agreeing that contestants really would have to think.
Sony’s current schedule confirms that Season 18 began on August 10 at 9 pm, with weekday episodes airing Monday to Friday. The broadcaster also lists a top prize of ₹7 crore for the season.
That makes the celebrity opener more than a conventional promotional episode. It effectively served as the first showcase for KBC 18’s emphasis on applied knowledge and decision-making.
The Trio Reached the ₹25 Lakh Stage
The game itself eventually became genuinely difficult.
During the premiere, Aamir, Sunny and Preity encountered a ₹25 lakh question asking them to identify the Urdu poet who wrote the lines beginning “Kabhi kisi ko mukammal jahan nahi milta…”
The options included Akbar Allahabadi, Jaun Elia, Nida Fazli and Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
The trio were unsure of the answer and used the season’s MahaFlip lifeline, which allowed them to change the question. When Bachchan later asked them to guess the answer to the original question, they chose Faiz Ahmed Faiz. The correct answer was Nida Fazli.
They ultimately won ₹25 lakh during the special episode. Contemporary reporting states that the celebrity winnings were intended for charity rather than being personal prize money.
That detail matters because it separates the episode from the regular contestant format: the stars were there primarily as promotional guests playing for a charitable cause.
Preity Zinta and Amitabh Bachchan Brought Their Own History
The episode also drew on Preity Zinta’s long-standing connection with Bachchan.
At one point, the host jokingly complained that he regularly sends Preity birthday wishes but does not receive replies. Preity explained that her children now recognise Bachchan largely through Kaun Banega Crorepati, adding a generational twist to their reunion.
The two actors have previously shared screen space in films including Armaan, giving their KBC interaction a layer of familiarity beyond a routine television appearance.
Preity also revisited her early equation with Sunny Deol during the programme, recalling a humorous episode involving a late-night phone call to the Deol household.
These exchanges gave the premiere something that celebrity episodes often depend on: history between the people in the room rather than only film promotion.
Sunny Deol Makes His First KBC Appearance
For Sunny Deol, the premiere carried an additional milestone.
Coverage surrounding the episode identified it as his first appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati. In one of the promos, Sunny described himself as an overthinker before jokingly suggesting that Aamir did not think quite as much an obvious setup for the season’s new theme.
Bachchan also revisited an old story about Sunny’s temper while shooting Darr, recalling the widely discussed incident in which the actor tore his trousers during a moment of frustration on set.
Rather than presenting Sunny only through Batwara 1947, the episode therefore pulled from several decades of Hindi-film history.
Why ‘Batwara 1947’ Was Central to the Premiere
The celebrity lineup was not random.
Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta lead Batwara 1947, while Aamir Khan is attached as producer through Aamir Khan Productions. The film is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and is set against the upheaval surrounding the Partition of India in 1947.
The cast also includes Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh and Karan Deol, among others. A.R. Rahman has composed the music, with Javed Akhtar writing the lyrics.
The film was scheduled for theatrical release on August 14, 2026, only four days after the KBC premiere, making the opening episode an important stop in the film’s promotional campaign.
That timing explains why Sony placed the trio at the centre of Season 18’s launch rather than treating them as guests appearing later in the run.
KBC Still Works as a Bollywood Promotional Platform
Celebrity appearances have long been part of Kaun Banega Crorepati, but the Season 18 premiere illustrates why the format continues to be useful for Hindi-film promotions.
Unlike a conventional press interaction, KBC allows actors to promote a film indirectly while stories from their careers, friendships and personalities emerge through gameplay.
For Batwara 1947, that was particularly useful. The film itself deals with a serious historical subject, whereas KBC allowed Sunny, Preity and Aamir to appear in a lighter setting without requiring the entire interaction to revolve around the movie’s Partition backdrop.
The result was a premiere that functioned simultaneously as a season launch, film-promotion vehicle and nostalgia-driven Bollywood reunion.
The Celebrity Hour Take
The strongest aspect of the KBC 18 premiere was not simply its star count.
Sony paired its “Sochna Padega” concept with guests whose own histories could sustain an episode beyond promotional talking points. Aamir naturally fit a discussion built around thinking and decision-making, Sunny brought a first-time KBC appearance and decades of film anecdotes, while Preity’s existing relationship with Amitabh Bachchan gave the show an easy sense of familiarity.
There is also a broader promotional strategy at work. Batwara 1947 deals with Partition, displacement and communal violence themes considerably heavier than a standard entertainment campaign. Putting its stars on KBC gave the film mainstream visibility without forcing every television moment to carry that emotional weight.
That makes the episode a useful example of why KBC, more than 25 years after its Indian debut, remains valuable to Bollywood: the quiz is the framework, but personality, memory and cinema history often provide the entertainment around it.
Sources & Verification
This report was prepared using Sony Entertainment Television’s official KBC 18 scheduling information and promotional material, including the broadcaster’s “Sochna Padega” campaign and its August 10 premiere details.
The Celebrity Hour independently cross-checked what actually occurred after the episode aired through coverage from The Indian Express, NDTV and other established publications. The ₹25 lakh question, MahaFlip lifeline, celebrity interactions and Batwara 1947 promotional context were verified against post-broadcast reporting rather than relying on the pre-airing news lead.
